Garrett welcomes the campers to Fort Jerome. As they walk around, he talks about the history. One of the kids asks him if the cannons still work. He says no and keeps talking about the history of the fort. Garrett stands on the edge of the roof and taunts the kids for being scared to join him. They hear a noise in the distance and something hits the fort. Then Garrett is grabbed by black goo and pulled off the edge. The kids scream.
Present Day
Frankie comes into Cece and Devin's house, where Cece and Alex are waiting. Cece says Trey thinks he might know something about the woman who took Anthony. They're waiting for him. Frankie goes over to Devin, who is looking at an old yearbook. Hannah felt so real to him. Frankie reminds him it was all in his head, but he finds that hard to believe because she looked exactly like the real Hannah. Frankie says Hannah's not alive anymore, but Devin feels like she is. It's hard to explain, but he has a weird connection to her. Frankie says he can't take a ghost girl to prom. Frankie has Devin think about what they've gone through and says this is just one more thing. Devin thinks this is different and Hannah really needs their help. If they can help her, maybe they can help Anthony. C.J. comes in, mad because his mom hired another delivery driver named D.J. Alex knows him and says he's cool. Cece wants to focus on what really matters. They argue over whether they were zombies or mutants, but Cece decides she doesn't care. What she cares about is finding her dad. He's still missing and in pieces. Trey comes in and shows them the 20/20 episode his dad was in. Joe Jr. talks about Matty being his neighbor. He thinks they were involved in a cult. The next shot is of Ramona with a man. She talks about fast-moving currents pulling people out to sea and their bodies often not being recovered. There's a reason why Fort Jerome was never open to the public. There are still chemical toxins left over from its days as a military base. Alex looks up Ramona, but finds nothing about her. There's one result for Dr. Pamani, but it's Avi Pamani. He wrote a book about global risk management. Devin says doctor or not, she was at the hospital and asks if Frankie's mom could help them as she works there. Frankie offers to try. Trey says he'll go with them while Alex, Cece, and C.J. try to track down the book.
Anthony wakes up in his lab. He goes to his desk, but his laptop won't turn on. He can't remember how he got there. And when he tries to go upstairs, an invisible force stops him. He bangs on it and throws a fire extinguisher at it. The extinguisher goes through it and disappears. Anthony calls for Devin and Cece.
Anthony remains trapped in the pod.
Frankie, Trey, and Devin arrive at the hospital and go to Lucia, who is at the desk. Frankie tells her they're looking for the doctor who treated Trey. Trey claims to be having a relapse of symptoms. Lucia looks up his doctor and finds that the doctor who saw him was a pediatric dermatologist. She calls someone and asks to talk to Jane Clark about a patient she saw in the ICU. When she hangs up, Lucia tells them that doctor had her badge stolen last week. She needs to report it right away. Frankie asks if they can look at the security footage, to try to identify her. Lucia has them come with her.
Lorraine pulls up the security footage from the morning after Trey was brought in. When the footage shows Devin checking on Frankie, they bicker about it. Finally, Ramona enters the frame. C.J. also saw her in a hallway. Lorraine brings up that footage next. They watch Ramona leave and get into her car. They get the license plate and Lorraine says she needs to turn it over to the police. Trey says they can run the plates at his dad's shop and they leave.
Jen goes to Anthony's place and knocks. Then she tries calling Anthony, but gets no answer. She leaves a message telling him she needs to see what's on the tape, too. Joe Jr. calls to her from across the street and asks when she's going to do something about people letting their dogs poop in his yard. She asks if he's seen Anthony. He hasn't, but he saw the teens leaving together in a hurry. Alex was with them. He tries again to get her to work on the dog poop, but she brushes him off. Jen gets back into her car and calls Officer Morales to ask about ankle bracelet monitoring. She needs a favor.
Cece and Alex ask the clerk at a bookstore about Avi Pamani's book, which they called about. She goes to check on it for them.
They sit down with the book. Cece reads that the book is about how the world has to prepare for things they can't see. He had multiple doctorates. Alex asks how they know he's related to Ramona. In the back is a picture of him with his daughter. C.J. spills his smoothie on the book and Cece has to wipe it away to read that his daughter is Ramona Pamani. He asks if they'll have to buy the book now and the clerk says yes.
Trey leads them to the address they got from the license plate. Devin is disturbed that he can just look up people's addresses like that. It's so they can do credit checks. She has an incredible credit score, over 800. They hide as Frankie notices Ramona's car approaching. They watch as she drives away, then get scared when they hear someone approaching. It's Cece, Alex, and C.J., who came after Trey texted them the address. They get to the door and Trey uses his bolt cutters to get it open. They go inside and look around. They find her lab and are creeped out by it. Devin finds his dad's shirt in a biohazard can. C.J. stops him from pulling it out. Trey finds a case of samples. Frankie comes in and tells them Cece found something. Trey takes the case with them and they find Cece poring over a journal documenting Ramona's experiments. It goes back to 1969. She's writing about the Orion Project.
1969
Avi Pamani welcomes his colleagues to the Orion Project. It's so secret that going forward, they'll be referred to only by their numbers. Ramona assigns those to them, dubbing them Number 3, Number 4, and Number 5. She's Number 2 and Avis is the one in charge. He has them open their cases, which have their gear.
Now in their protective suits, they walk into Fort Jerome. Avi says the facility was built after the incident. Once they go down, they stay down. They'll have no contact with the outside world from below and as far as anyone not in their group is concerned, the facility doesn't exist. Ramona opens the hole in the floor and they go down one at a time. Once they're all down, Avi closes the door. Number 5 is impressed by the large ship that is suspended from the ceiling. Avi says they must wear their protective suits at all times. Number 3 asks if they're dealing with a contagion. Avi says they don't know what they're dealing with. That's why they're there. It might be a threat, but they don't really know anything. They know something must have prompted biohazard protocols and asks what that was. Avi shows them Garrett encased in a pod. He was the first contact. He's alive inside the pod. Avi tells them to get to work.
Six Months Later
Ramona and Number 5 have a mouse in a box. Avi watches them and says it's day 186 and the mouse is subject 339B. Number 3 and Number 4 help him. He calls for them to start exposure. Ramona and Number 5 open the box. Black goo tendrils immediately come off the ship and encompass the mouse. The mouse starts responding to it. They watch as the mouse is left in its own pod. They inject it with a serum. The pod dissolves, leaving the mouse behind. They put the live mouse back in the box. They celebrate the serum working. Number 5 asks what's next. Ramona says now they can try it on Garrett, but she freezes when she sees the look on Avi's face.
Ramona goes to Avi and asks him what the real purpose of the Orion Project is. He says it's to assess and contain, as she knows. She tells him not to lie to her. She thinks the serum is actually a weapon and he's going to use it on the ship. He says if it means saving humanity, he will destroy the ship. She says they're scientists, not soldiers. They don't know that the ship is a threat. He thinks they do because of Garrett. This could mean life or death for everyone on the planet. They argue about it and then Avi goes back to his work.
Number 3 and Number 5 are playing foosball, their only entertainment. Number 4 comes back from a run and says they should work out more. They're hopeful the serum will work and they'll be able to go back to their lives. Number 5 is planning to go to Hawaii for a month and then go see his kids. Number 3 is surprised he has kids. Ramona comes in and tells them no one is leaving yet and has them take a seat.
Avi comes to the team and tells them to get suited up so they can test the serum on the ship. When they're silent, he realizes Ramona talked to them. They don't like the idea of killing aliens. Avi reminds them that containing the threat is their mission. They all agree that they won't do it. Avi thinks the human race is at risk and says they can't risk that. He'll do it so they don't have to.
Avi hooks everything up and injects the ship with the serum. Once it's done, Ramona says mission accomplished. Avi leaves the room. Inside his pod, Garrett starts moving.
An alarm blares at Fort Jerome. Garrett says this isn't him.
Avi wakes Ramona up and tells her to put her suit on. They find Number 5 in the hallway with his eye dangling down. He says this isn't him and attacks Avi. Ramona helps Avi fight him off. They enter the room as the ship opens up. Number 4 is on the floor without his helmet. They watch him get grabbed. Avi says the serum isn't shutting down the ship. Instead, the ship is fighting back. They get back to the exit. Ramona climbs up and calls for her dad to follow. He tells her his visor cracked when they were fighting off Number 5. He takes his helmet off, apologizing for leaving her with this burden. It's up to her and only her now. He tells her to think of the greater good, but before he can say more, the effects start to hit him. Ramona screams as the door closes.
Ramona goes home and finds an enveloped labeled, "In the even of my death." She opens it and reads it. Avi tells her she must contain the ship. If it gets out, it could end humanity as they know it. He's sorry he won't be there to help, but he loves her. Ramona pulls out her book and starts writing.
Ramona orders the teens to get away from her research. She says they don't know what it is, but they tell her they actually know everything, including how she locked her own father in the facility to die. Ramona says they have no idea what she's been through and what she's sacrificed. There's more to it than what's in the entries. Her father was right about the ship being a threat. She's been the last 55 years containing it. And the Brewer family has made that difficult the entire time. Cece asks if her dad is in the room under the Fort. Ramona says that's what happens when you're exposed. The ship draws you back to it. Trey asks if that's what happened to him. Frankie asks how Trey got out. Ramona says after all these years, she perfected her father's formula. Cece says that means it could save their dad. Ramona says it's too risky to go back down there. Cece says her dad is a scientist and he always says science should be the riskiest profession or you're not doing it right. Ramona was right about being a scientist, not a soldier. She still is. Cece reminds Ramona of her younger self. Cece knows she'd do anything to get her dad back and asks Ramona to help them. She agrees to help them, but says they have to move fast because he doesn't have a lot of time.
Goo comes up through the drain toward Anthony. He backs away from it.
