Goosebumps Wiki

Greetings, Goosebumps fans! I am doing a walkthrough of the fourth Special Edition book in the Give Yourself Goosebumps series: One Night in Payne House. Follow the instructions below so you'll know how to win the book.

You and your friend, Trevor, have dared each other to go to the haunted house, Payne House. Payne House got its name from the family who lived there until they suddenly left town. It's where your favorite scary movie called One Night in Payne House was filmed. You have eleven items to take with you: a flashlight, candles and matches, a leash, a handful of pebbles, bug spray, a baseball bat, Halloween candy, a white sheet, paper and a pencil, canned string, and a cassette recorder. You can only take three of those items, though, and the items you must pick are the bug spray, the Halloween candy, and the white sheet.

After taking your items, you and Trevor go to Payne House and notice that the door isn't locked. You hear the sound of someone breathing inside the house. You are given the option of either going in or questioning why you should even consider going into such a creepy house. This is a joke choice, though, as picking the latter option will simply result in Trevor explaining that you dared each other and told everyone you were going into Payne House. You end up going in anyway.

The moment you go in, the door slams shut behind you and locks itself! However, you soon realize that you're not alone. One of the Pomeranian dogs from the movie arrives. At first, Trevor isn't too frightened by it and is hardly phased when you try to explain what happened in the movie. Soon, the dog changes into a huge beast, a scene that you recognize instantly! Trevor is now as frightened as you are, but you don't know how to get away. Fortunately, a voice then states that there's a way out-but only one, which you have to find. You then get to your first real set of choices in this adventure: asking if you have a leash or a handful of pebbles. If you've been following my advice so far, you'll have neither of those items.

The dog-beast advances toward you, and you're now beginning to panic. The book then asks if you have a baseball bat, but you won't if you've followed my advice so far.

All seems lost as the beast gets ready to leap at you, but then, Trevor runs to the dining room. You try to stop him, explaining that the Tongue Thing was in there in the movie, but Trevor does not hear you. Not wanting him to face the Tongue Thing alone, you take off after him. At the sight of the creature, Trevor tries to run away, only to find that the door is gone. You then remember that in the movie, all of the doors disappear whenever someone goes through them. The Tongue Thing gets ready to fall on you, and you're asked if you have Halloween candy or a baseball bat. If you've been following my advice, you'll have the candy.

Side note: this set of choices has a bit of a continuity glitch. In the previous set of choices, having the bat takes you to a bad ending, and you can only progress if you do not have the bat. In this set of choices, however, saying you have the bat does not get you a bad ending as a cheater trap but actually makes the book act like you do have the bat (you'll still get a bad ending, regardless, though). You really have to wonder how errors like this can escape the editors' notice.

You throw some candy bars at the Tongue Thing, and it instantly eats them! After you throw the rest of the bag, you and Trevor race to the door on the far side. When Trevor opens the door, however, you find yourselves in the company of roaches that fly straight at Trevor's face! You're given the option of staying in the dining room with the Tongue Thing or using bug spray if you have it. If you've been following my advice, you should have the bug spray. Choose to use it.

You use the bug spray to kill the roaches and save yourself and Trevor. After fleeing, the two of you begin talking about what to do. The book asks you if you're carrying paper and a pencil or candles and matches, neither of which you should have if you've been following my advice so far.

When you tell him that you have no paper or matches, Trevor asks you what to do. You tell him that you've felt a library and a back stairway. Trevor asks you where you want to go. The option to pick is the library.

You go into the library, only to find that there isn't a floor, which is how it was in the movie. Trevor almost pushes you into the pit, which is problematic, because he's tall for his age and heavy (at 92 pounds). The book asks you if you weigh more or less than 60 pounds, and you'd better hope you weigh more. (Otherwise, you'll be unable to win this book without cheating.)

Upon pushing Trevor back, you notice a thin railway. On the other side are a bunch of empty bookcases. However, there is one book, and it's titled Monster Blood (the third book in the Goosebumps series). You walk on the railway to the other side, but when you pick it up, you find that the book's pages are torn out! A voice then tells you to put the book down and gives you some advice. The first is that you must never come to the library again. The second is that there are certain rooms to avoid, and the color of one room to avoid is the same color as the Monster Blood. You're then given a little puzzle: you must determine the color of the Monster Blood. The letters of the correct answer are in a code that has each letter of the alphabet given its numbered position. If you're a Goosebumps expert, you should know the color of Monster Blood. It's also crucial to know the position of each letter in the answer. Add them up together (repeat letters if necessary), and you get the page you should turn to.

After solving the puzzle, you're given another clue: the color of the room you should go to is the complementary color to Monster Blood. You're told that you'll find an important tool there. You go to the second floor and are given the option of five rooms, the Tower Room, the Pink Room, the Purple Parlor, the Red Room, and the Green Room. If you've followed my advice, you should already know which room to go to (and which room not to go to).

You come across a remote on a table. After you pick the remote up, you and Trevor go to the Pink Room, only to find that the walls are now closing in! You're then asked if you've been to the Red Room and told that if so, you're holding something that has a number on it and said number is the page you ought to turn to. If you've followed my advice, you should have an idea what to do next.

Under Trevor's (panicked) suggestion, you press the remote. Not only do the walls move back, but a new door appears! You're then given the option of exploring the Pink Room or going to the Tower Room. The former option is what you should pick.

We're now at the home stretch. While exploring the Pink Room, you come across a chest of drawers. When you open it, you find a small brass key. When you find a hidden door, you climb the stairs to the Tower Room, whereupon you use the key to unlock the door to the Room. You feel a breeze and realize that there is a (broken) window. Trevor points to a stack of sheets on the floor and states that you can use them to make a rope to lower yourselves out of the window. Just then, however, you hear a loud bark and realize that it's the dog-beasts! To make matters worse, you and Trevor notice a ghostly mist slipping under the door. In a panic, you start grabbing sheets and tying them together. Unfortunately, your rope isn't long enough and doesn't reach the ground. You're then asked if you brought a white sheet from home, which you should have, if you've followed everything that I've said so far.

You quickly tie your sheet to the rope and almost get it to reach the ground. As you and Trevor are scurrying down, however, a voice starts telling you that you'll never make it. In horror, you realize that the voice was coming from the "sheet", and the "sheets" are actually ghosts! The ghosts then unclasp their hands and let you and Trevor drop. Fortunately, we then get our final set of choices: the book asks you if you tied your own sheet from home, which, if you've followed my advice so far, should be the case.

While falling, you notice a sheet that has not turned into a ghost. It is your own sheet, and it caught onto a drainpipe. You grab your sheet and are then, in turn, grabbed by Trevor, leaving the two of you stuck dangling twenty feet above the ground. Fortunately, some trick-or-treaters notice and use a ladder to help get you down. When they ask you what you were doing, you tell them that you were in Payne House, trying to escape. The teens don't believe you, and you and Trevor dare each other to go back in and get a souvenir to prove that you were there. You've won the book!
