- Having recently moved from New York City, Zach Cooper arrives in Madison, Delaware with his mother, Gale, who had taken up the position of vice-principal at Madison High School. Upset over having to move, Zach complains to Gale, asking if there were other towns hiring vice-principals. Gale questions where else he would prefer to live, with Zach jokingly replying that he would have favored Guantánamo Bay or North Korea over Madison.
- After strolling through town square, the Coopers arrive at their new home. The two walk to the front door, with Gale commenting on the existence of a yard -- something they did not have in New York -- in order to make Zach feel better. However, Zach tells his mother that she does not need to worry, reconciling that he loves her and wittily stating that he cannot legally live on his own yet. Meanwhile, their next-door neighbor spies on them from his window, annoyed that they have moved in. Zach notices this; however, the blinds suddenly flick shut soon after. Confused, Zach heads indoors.
- Inside, Zach finds Gale gushing about the size of the kitchen, to which he remarks that neither of them cook. Following a comment made by Gale about the lack of noise, Lorraine Conyers, Zach's aunt and Gale's sister, abruptly enters the house, loudly announcing herself to the Coopers. She hugs the two of them, commenting on the lack of color in Gale's outfit and how handsome Zach has grown compared to how he looked as a baby. Lorraine reaches into her purse and pulls out a sparkly hat sporting the New York Yankees logo. She gifts it to Zach and tells him it is a part of her new men's clothing line and that it is limited edition. Zach expresses fake enthusiasm and tries on the hat per the request of Gale and Lorraine. Finding an excuse to leave, Zach informs the two that he is going to go unpack some boxes from outside, though Gale forces him to keep the hat on.
- Zach opens the trunk of the trailer and gathers a couple of boxes containing personal cargo. He begins carrying them to the front door before the bottom of one of the boxes gives way and its contents fall to the pavement. Suddenly, the daughter of his next-door neighbor, who had witnessed Zach's clumsiness, sarcastically calls him smooth from her window, alerting herself to Zach. He shakes it off and the two greet each other. Noticing the Yankees logo on his cap, the girl asks Zach how long it took for them to drive from New York. This confuses Zach, as he had not told her where he was from, but the girl reassures him that she only knows because of his "pretty hat". Embarrassed, Zach quickly takes it off, stating his aunt had gifted it to him. The girl flirts with Zach, telling him it is a gift to everyone who sees him with it on. The two introduce each other, with Zach learning that her name is Hannah. However, she is shooed away from the window by her father and says goodbye to Zach. Suddenly, the man appears at the open window, shooting Zach a death stare. Zach awkwardly tries to be friendly with his neighbor, but his attempts are futile, as the man angrily barks at Zach to stay on his side of the fence and not come near him or his daughter before quickly shutting the blinds. Startled, Zach gathers his fallen items and heads back inside.
- Zach sets his boxes down on the kitchen table and describes having met their grumpy new neighbor to Gale and Lorraine. The latter explains that the mysterious man goes by the name "Mr. Shivers" and moved to Madison a few years ago. Meanwhile, Gale digs through one of the boxes and finds a photo of Zach and Mr. Cooper together, prompting her to start reminiscing. Zach witnesses this and, distraught over the death of his father, excuses himself from the room, claiming he is going to begin decorating his room. Gale and Lorraine pick up on this behavior, with Lorraine asking Gale if she and Zach have been doing okay since Mr. Cooper died. She responds that it has been difficult for the two of them, and hopes that having moved to Madison will help.
- Sometime later, Lorraine leaves the Cooper Residence and goes on a date with a man at a sushi restaurant. She becomes interested in him, but their feelings are not mutual, as he fails to respond to any of her calls after the date.
- At night, Zach watches an old, camcorder video of him and his dad playing catch and becomes emotional. Gale overhears the video from the hallway and asks Zach if he is okay. He lies to her, saying he was only looking at photos of him as a baby. He turns off the camcorder and puts it away.

1st[]
- Zach and Gale arrive at Madison High School for their first day at their new school. Gale excitedly begins exiting the vehicle but is thwarted by Zach after he locks the door on her, saying that he, the new student, does not want to be seen entering the school with the vice-principal. He strikes up a deal with Gale, asking if he can have a 60-second head start ahead of her. She agrees under the one condition that he gives the new school a try. Zach jokingly says that he will not make any promises and begins to leave only for Gale to get back at him by locking his door. He promises to give it a shot and exits the car, embarking toward the school.
- A short time later, Zach attends an assembly in the school's gymnasium announcing Gale's new position as vice-principal. While students are getting seated, a strange kid named Champ navigates his way toward Zach and takes a seat next to him. After greeting the new student, Champ waves and says hello to a friendly girl named Taylor, who mistakenly refers to him as "Chump" in response.
- Principal Garrison announces Gale as the school's new vice-principal from the gymnasium's court. After telling the school to treat her with respect, a student imitates a fart sound, sparking a roar of laughter from his peers and upsetting Garrison. He gives Gale the stage, but she is met with minimal applause, with Coach Carr being the only one to clap for her. Gale greets the school and begins voicing her excitement for the following day's fall dance, claiming that she "can't stop twerking about it", not knowing the meaning of the word. The school cringes and Zach becomes embarrassed. Champ expresses his dislike for the new vice-principal only for Zach to reveal that she is his mother, causing Champ to try and take the comment back. He then asks Zach if he is going to the dance with anyone, to which Zach replies that he is not. Champ interprets this as meaning that Zach is going to the dance alone, and states that he might do that as well. He suddenly suggests that he and Zach go to the dance together and branch off with different girls.
- The assembly ends shortly thereafter. Champ hands Zach a slip of paper containing his contact information and says to send him a message if he ever needs to. The student body shuffles out of the gymnasium as Principal Garrison gives a strict warning about engaging in sexual activity at the dance.
- After school, Zach goes outside to take out the trash. He hears a noise coming from behind him and calls out to see if anyone is there. Hannah pops out through a hole in the fence and startles Zach. She asks if she had scared him, which Zach denies. He tells Hannah about having not seen her at school that day, and she responds that she is homeschooled by her father. Zach, remembering his encounter with Mr. Shivers the previous day, poorly lies about him seeming to be nice. Hannah apologizes for her father's behavior and says to not take his words to heart. Zach asks her if there is anything she likes to do for fun around the neighborhood, and she replies that there is. Hannah tells him to come with her and walks away. Zach hesitates at first yet soon finds himself following behind. He questions where the two are headed but Hannah keeps it a surprise, saying it will be fun.
- Hannah leads Zach into a forest, which prompts him to ask whether she knows where she is going. Hannah responds that she does and tells him to hurry up. After Zach facetiously asks if he is being led to be killed, Hannah ducks behind a tree, causing him to temporarily become lost before he is startled by a bird. Hannah coins Zach the nickname "Scaredy-Cat" and informs him that they are nearly there.
- The two reach Hannah's secret location. As they arrive, Hannah instructs Zach to remain put as she runs off somewhere else. She suddenly pulls a giant light switch that illuminates an abandoned amusement park. In awe, Zach tells Hannah that he had not expected this and asks her about the carnival. She explains that it had been built a long time ago, but its constructors used up all of their money and left the park deserted. After the brief history lesson, she begins climbing the side of the carnival's Ferris wheel and encourages Zach to do the same, much to his unease. She tells him not to worry, as she has done this many times before, and Zach eventually gives in.
- Hannah reaches a passenger car toward the top of the Ferris wheel and waits for Zach. He arrives not long after, and the two greet each other once he reaches the top. Zach takes a seat next to Hannah, with both of them commenting on the spectacular view. Hannah proceeds to ask Zach why he and Gale moved to Madison; Zach sarcastically answers that he told his mother that moving to Madison was his dream. Hannah questions Zach about his sarcasm, and he implies to her that he uses it as a coping mechanism, revealing that his father passed away the year prior. Hannah sympathizes with Zach, telling him that her mother was never present in her life and that she and her father are constantly moving from town to town. The two share a moment before Zach asks Hannah how they plan on getting down. Jokingly, she tells him that there is no way down and that the two of them are stuck.
- Zach and Hannah climb down from the Ferris wheel and stay at the amusement park a little while longer. At some point, Zach finds old cotton candy and eats it, which shocks Hannah. After this, the two head back home.
- Zach and Hannah arrive back at their respective houses later that night. Upon reaching the fence, Zach thanks Hannah for the night out, telling her that it was the best experience he has had while in Madison, and she receives the compliment warmly. Hannah passes through the fence into her yard, and Zach informs her that he will be taking the trash out on Tuesdays and Thursdays in case they would like to do this again. After Hannah tells him that she will keep that in mind, Mr. Shivers appears behind her and bitterly asks why she is outside. She apologizes to her father and runs back inside. Shivers appears at the fence and gives Zach his final warning: to stay away from him and his daughter or else he will be met with a terrible fate. Zach says that he believes him, backing away from the fence and heading back inside as Shivers gives him one last scowl.
2nd[]
- The following night, while drowsily working on algebra homework, Zach notices Hannah and Mr. Shivers loudly arguing in front of their upstairs window. Hannah angrily asks her father why she is not allowed to have friends and see Zach, and Shivers yells that she knows the answer. After Hannah says that it is not fair that she is always locked inside, Shivers raises his voice and shouts that he will never let her see Zach again. Hannah pleads with her father to calm down, but he shatters an object, and Hannah lets out a shill scream. Having witnessed all of this, Zach frantically scrambles out of the house yelling Hannah's name. He runs outside to the fence at the side of the house only to find that the hole has been boarded off by Shivers. Forced to improvise, he grabs the nearby trash can and uses it to climb over the fence before sprinting to the front of his neighbor's house and pounding on the door. Shivers answers shortly thereafter, and Zach desperately asks if Hannah is okay having heard her scream. Shivers lies to Zach, telling him that there was no scream and to go away before slamming the door in his face. Worried about Hannah's safety, Zach rushes back home and informs Gale that Hannah is in danger. Having not yet met their neighbors, Gale asks who Hannah is, smirking. Realizing his mother is of no help, Zach dials 9-1-1 and calls the police, notifying them of what he heard next-door.
- Accompanied by Zach and Gale, two police officers arrive at Shivers' residence and knock on his door. Upon answering, Shivers is prematurely told that he is under arrest by rookie Officer Brooks. The more experienced Officer Stevens quickly corrects her, saying that things have not quite escalated that far yet. The two officers introduce themselves to Shivers, with Brooks apologizing to him for her ignorance, but Stevens tells her that she is doing great. Stevens informs Shivers that they were tipped off about a possible domestic disturbance at his house, but Shivers denies this, telling the cops that he has been unaccompanied all night and has not heard anything. Knowing that he is lying, Zach calls Shivers out and asks where Hannah is, knowing the scream he heard to have been hers. Although Shivers admits to having a daughter named Hannah, he lies again, saying that she has a newlywed husband and flew to London the morning prior. The officers fall for his lie and begin to leave when a woman's scream suddenly rings out from inside, prompting them to investigate further.
- Upon heading indoors, the source of the scream is seemingly able to be traced back to the audio of a horror movie playing on Shivers' television. Although Brooks becomes momentarily hostile when hearing Shivers is an audiophile due to ignorance, he once again fools the police. Having been deceived as well, Gale apologizes for her son and introduces herself to Shivers, stating that he has a beautiful home. He sarcastically accepts the apology and thanks her for bringing her son and the police into his home. While the cops are making their apology, Shivers suspiciously looks toward the staircase leading to the second floor. Zach notices this and promptly begins running toward the staircase calling out to Hannah only to be apprehended by the police and brought outside.
- The two officers grill Zach about the punishment for "falsely" filing a police report, which Brooks incorrectly states is three years in jail. Zach breaks free of the officers' grasp and yells at his mother for believing Shivers' lies. Gale angrily says that she has had enough and tells him to go home. Zach glances back at his neighbor's house and sees Shivers smugly closing the door. Upset, Zach returns home. Gale apologizes to the police, who tell her not to worry and comment that Zach is on drugs. Gale rolls her eyes and says goodnight.
- Having been contacted by Gale to look after Zach for the night, Lorraine arrives at the Cooper Residence. Gale answers the door, telling her sister that she has to chaperone for the dance at the high school and does not want to leave Zach alone by himself after what happened earlier that night. Lorraine states that he is likely just having a difficult time adjusting to the move and that a night with his aunt will help. After thanking Lorraine, Gale leaves for the dance and lets her sister inside. Lorraine calls Zach downstairs and the two take a seat in the kitchen.
- Lorraine long-windedly describes the sushi date she went on two days prior to Zach, but he pays little attention to his aunt. He glances outside and notices Shivers arguing with Hannah in front of their upstairs window again, albeit silently this time. With his suspicions confirmed and the reiteration that Hannah is in trouble, Zach comes up with a cover-up story that he has a test on Monday and has to study in his room in order to avoid his aunt for the rest of the night. Lorraine says goodnight to him and he rushes upstairs, thinking of ways he could possibly save Hannah.
- Needing Champ's assistance to rescue Hannah, Zach calls him, lying that he has changed his mind about the dance and has invited girls over to his house who would like to attend it with the two of them. This easily convinces Champ to come over.
- Zach, disguising himself as a police officer, calls Shivers, telling him to report to the police station.
- Champ arrives at Zach's house fully dressed for the dance. He heads toward the front door, but Zach, having snuck out the window, motions for him to meet him at the fence at the side of the house. He asks Zach which of the two will be the wingman and questions his friend's outfit choice, oblivious to the situation at hand. Zach tells Champ to be quiet and to duck down, but Champ says that his suit is new, not wanting to get it dirty, and asks where the girls are. Zach admits to having lied about that and informs Champ that he needs his help, telling him about the girl next-door being locked inside by her psychotic father. Champ then inappropriately asks if said girl has a friend, to which Zach replies that he is serious. The former becomes upset about having been lied to and roped into this situation, and asks how Zach knows that Shivers will leave the residence. Zach describes how he had called his neighbor pretending to be the police and told him to turn up at the police station, which Champ points out could get him in serious trouble. Soon after this, Shivers appears outside and gets inside his car. Alert, Zach forces Champ and himself to the ground so as to not be seen by Shivers. This upsets Champ, as the ground is wet, but Zach gets him to quiet down. Shivers pulls out of the driveway and heads toward the police station. Once the coast is clear, Zach props up the trash can and the two leap the fence, with Champ failing to stick the landing. Zach leads the way toward the basement door, which he lock picks with ease, impressing Champ. Zach opens the door and clicks on a flashlight, telling Champ to stay outside and remain alert while he investigates downstairs. Champ responds negatively to this, saying that he will run away if danger approaches. Fed up, Zach heads downstairs.
- Upon entering the creepy basement, Zach is startled by a cuckoo clock. Moments later, Champ enters the basement and grabs hold of Zach's shoulder, frightening both of them. Zach yells at Champ for ditching his lookout position, with Champ shooting back that he is naturally fearful and afraid of being left alone. After the two finish arguing, Champ notices many bear traps strewn about the floor. A movement is heard upstairs, and Zach tells Champ that they need to hurry. The two carefully traverse the bear trap-infested basement -- during which Champ walks face-first into a cobweb -- and safely make it to the ground floor doorway.
- Zach and Champ make their way inside. Knowing Hannah to be upstairs, Zach guides Champ to the staircase, only for the two of them to come to a stop when they hear a faint noise coming from above. They climb the staircase to the second floor and, once upstairs, open a door to the room containing the source of the noise. Inside, Zach notices that the sound appears to be coming from a bookshelf containing several shelves of similar manuscripts. Champ presses a light switch and takes a closer look at the titles, and, upon reading off a few of them, notices that the books come from the Goosebumps series, written by R.L. Stine. Zach asks why Shivers has a ton of kids' books, with Champ interjecting that they are anything but, saying that kids' books do not keep you up all night. After he then questions whatever happened to Stine, Zach states that he simply disappeared one day and encourages him to continue looking for Hannah. Ignoring Zach, Champ picks up The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena, the book which he claims stopped him from visiting his grandmother who lives in Pasadena. Becoming annoyed, Zach grabs the book and is about to put it back when Champ notices the books have locks. Zach locates a key on Shivers' desk and removes it from its glass casing before taking the book from Champ's hand and unlocking it.
- Seconds later, Hannah swings at the two with a bat, fearing them to be intruders, but they duck just in time. Confused, Hannah questions what Zach is doing in her home, with Zach responding that he had heard her scream and feared she was in danger. Hannah tries to usher them to leave, but, seizing the opportunity, Champ introduces himself to her and asks if she would like to go to the dance. Hannah cuts him off and abruptly asks if they had unlocked one of the books. Guilty, Zach admits to doing so and goes to pick up the manuscript, and in doing so, accidentally opens it. Suddenly, the three are thrown backward as Hannah attempts to close the book. A giant ape-like snow creature emerges from the pages of the book and materializers in a whirlwind of ink. The trio is left quietly staring at the Abominable Snowman who hits its head on the ceiling. Fearing for the group's safety, Hannah whispers for the three to remain silent, but Champ accidentally knocks over a lamp, alerting himself to the snow creature. The snowman roars at him and flings the overhead light into the bookshelf, causing it to collapse. The creature begins charging as Champ lets out a loud, shrill scream, but Zach grabs hold of his cowardly friend and pushes him out of the snowman's path at the last second. The creature tumbles through the wall and out onto the street, beginning its rampage through the neighborhood and setting off several car alarms in the process. Hannah, realizing she is in deep trouble, grabs the book and runs outside in pursuit of the monster, with the two boys close behind. However, unbeknownst to the three of them, the lock to the Night of the Living Dummy manuscript suddenly clicks open.
- Bewildered as to what has just happened, Zach grabs hold of Hannah and attempts to ask what is going on. Realizing there is little time, Hannah says that she cannot explain it and tells Zach to go home before continuing to chase after the snowman. Zach attempts to follow but is apprehended by Champ, who states that chasing after a monster that crawled out of a book is a bad idea. Zach dismisses Champ's concerns and pursues after Hannah, with Champ adamantly following close behind.
- Zach and Champ follow the trail of the monster's rampage to the town's ice rink. Having lost track of Hannah and the snowman, the two boys deduce that they both must be in there. Upon entering the building, they are met with a scene of destruction courtesy of the snowman. Champ recommends calling the police, but Zach reminds him of how inexperienced the Madison cops are. The two notice a giant scratch mark left by the snowman before they are startled by a spraying soda can rolling across the floor.
- Zach leads the way to the rink where they find Hannah, standing in the center and looking around nervously. The two slowly approach her, and Zach asks her what is going on and how the snowman came out of a book. She tells him to quiet down as the creature is close by. After the two boys discuss weapons they could use to kill the beast, Hannah reveals that it cannot be slain through conventional means. As they are arguing, a piece of candy falls from the ceiling, and the trio bends down to inspect it.
- Suddenly, more and more candy begins to fall before a vending machine plummets from the bottom of the jumbotron. Zach is able to alert everyone and they all manage to avoid it just in time. The Abominable Snowman falls soon after and begins eating the candy from within the vending machine. Realizing that the monster is distracted, Zach and Champ begin dragging Hannah away to safety much to her disdain, as she tells them that the only way to defeat the creature is by putting it back into the book. Hannah breaks free of their grasp and unlocks the manuscript, which the Abominable Snowman notices. Hannah stands steadily and holds the closed book out in front of her as the creature begins to proceed toward the group. Champ shouts at Hannah to open the book at once, but she refuses, saying that the snowman is not close enough. The snowman reaches them and Hannah begins to open the book, but she is too late, as the monster slaps the book out of her hand and sends it sliding across the ice to the other side of the rink. Hannah gets up and begins running toward the book, but the snowman punches the ice, creating a crack that causes Hannah to fall onto her stomach. She slides for the book but is unable to grab it, with it being just barely out of her reach. When the Abominable Snowman begins barrelling toward the manuscript, Zach grabs a hockey stick at the side of the rink and chucks it across the ice into the book, knocking it out of the snowman's path in the nick of time.
- Zach helps Hannah to her feet as Champ gets on a Zamboni and encourages the two to climb aboard. Champ starts it up only to realize that it is extremely slow. He quickly gets off of it just as the Abominable Snowman jumps up onto it and swipes at him. Zach and Hannah hug the side of the Zamboni and crouch down low, hiding from the creature. The Abominable Snowman peers over the side of the Zamboni and discovers their location. It swings at them with a punch, but they are able to duck out of the way.
- Champ finds a doorway leading to the other side of the glass walls of the rink and shouts for Zach and Hannah to get inside. The two of them run toward the room with the Abominable Snowman in hot pursuit. They manage to slide into the room just as Champ closes the door, which hits the snowman in the face, knocking it to the ground. The three momentarily celebrate before the snowman rises back to its feet and begins grabbing for the trio. It pounds on and shatters the glass and is nearly able to reach for the three teens, but its body slowly starts to turn to ink and begins to be sucked back into its book by an unknown figure. Zach, Hannah, and Champ look on as the Abominable Snowman attempts to escape capture. Ultimately, it is no use, and the creature is sucked back into the pages of the book. Shivers slams the book shut and angrily demands that the three get in his car immediately.
- Shivers drives the three of them back to his house. Champ asks multiple questions about what just happened, but Shivers demands silence. Hannah tries to tell her father that the two boys were only attempting to help, but Shivers reminds them that he had instructed them to stay away or else something terrible would happen, which ended up becoming true. He states that kids today disobey orders and begins muttering to himself about how they chose The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena as opposed to a book such as Little Shop of Hamsters. Zach begins piecing together that Shivers is actually R.L. Stine and starts reciting his suspicions to him. Shivers denies this, so Zach begins baiting him to reveal who he really is himself, saying that Stine's books are terrible and that he is a copycat of Stephen King. Shivers slams on the breaks and furiously snaps at Zach, telling him that King desires to have his writing ability and that he has sold way more books than him, finally revealing himself to be Stine. Hannah calms her father down as Champ enthusiastically begins obsessing over Stine. Champ takes a photo with the writer, which upsets him. Champ apologizes, saying that he only wanted to post the picture on his Instagram. Stine asks to see the photo and Champ hands him the phone, which Stine proceeds to chuck out the window and onto the pavement before continuing to drive back home.
- Stine pulls into his driveway and everybody gets out of the car. After Zach asks what happens next, Stine instructs him and Champ to go home and get to bed before running inside and telling Hannah that the two must move again. Hannah goes after her father, and Zach and Champ are left outside. As Champ asks him what he would like to do next, Zach sneaks into the house after Stine and Hannah, with Champ following behind shortly thereafter.
- As Zach and Champ enter the house, they overhear an argument between Hannah and Stine in which Hannah says that she likes it in Madison and does not want to move, whereas Stine tries to tell her that they are not a normal family and simply cannot function as such. He orders his daughter to go pack her things before she angrily marches out of the room. Zach and Champ then appear behind Stine in the room's doorway. Stine feels their presence behind him and proceeds to lift an object off of the shelf in front of him and hurl it at the two boys, missing them by a long shot. He asks the two what they are doing and tells them to go home, but Zach demands an explanation from Stine for the events that transpired that night. Stine gives in: he explains that he had bad allergies as a child that kept him inside, which resulted in him being picked on by local kids and having no friends. He goes on, saying that he found a passion in writing and used it to frighten said kids with scary monster stories. However, the monsters became real one day, literally leaping off the pages of his stories. He tells Zach that they are safe if the Goosebumps manuscripts remain locked and says that they all have just experienced what happens when they are unlocked. Stine grabs Hannah and states that it is time for them to leave.
- As Stine is explaining to Hannah which manuscripts to collect while entering the room with the books, he discovers Night of the Living Dummy overturned and opened on the floor. Realizing what this means, Stine becomes troubled. As soon as the book is discovered, Slappy, having been released from the manuscript, says hello to Stine while sitting in the room's armchair. He asks Stine how long it has been since the two have last spoken and proceeds to ask who his new "friends" are, which results in Zach and Champ trying to minimize their connection to the writer. Stine lies to the dummy, telling him that it is great to finally meet him again. Slappy teleports across the room and lifts up the books' key. He questions why he was released from his book and asks Stine if it was to destroy Madison. Again lying, Stine tells Slappy that he is correct and says that he cannot do it without him. However, Slappy notices Stine reaching for the opened manuscript and angrily demands whether his creator is plotting to lock him back up. Stine denies this, but the dummy responds that he knows if he is lying. Stine lunges for the book, but Slappy suddenly teleports and takes the book away. He appears at the hole in the wall created by the Abominable Snowman and lights a match, telling Stine that he is very unhappy with him and that he will never be going back into the book before setting it on fire and tossing it outside. Slappy threatens Stine, saying that he is going to begin making the decisions and that all of Stine's monsters will be unleashed that night. He begins to laugh and teleports away. Champ becomes relieved at the dummy's disappearance, but Stine has the opposite reaction, noticing that Slappy has taken all of the books with him.
- Slappy, now at the front of Stine's house, opens The Haunted Car, unleashing the titular character before burning the book as well. Slappy gets inside and the car starts up. The dummy unlocks the manuscript of Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes and throws it out of the window, resulting in the book flipping open and the lawn gnomes being released. Slappy refers to the story as a "real page-turner" from inside the car before flicking a match at the book and burning it. The Haunted Car proceeds to take off down the street as Slappy laughs maniacally.
- As they are running downstairs, Stine grills Zach for unleashing the evil dummy from his book. Zach tries to tell Stine that he had only mistakenly opened one book which may have led to Slappy being released, and although Hannah backs this up, claiming that the snowman knocked the Night of the Living Dummy manuscript off of the shelf, Stine still blames Zach for everything that has happened. Stine tries to leave the house through the front door but discovers that it has been locked from the outside. After the four of them notice movement coming from an air vent, Stine ushers everyone to exit the house through the kitchen door.
- Upon entering the kitchen, the group comes to a halt as they notice a lawn gnome standing in the pet flap of the room's door. Champ questions why it is there, with Zach whispering that he is unsure. The four of them start to spot more and more gnomes around the kitchen, and suddenly dozens of them begin filing out of the room's cabinets and gather in the center of the room. Zach optimistically states that they could be friendly, but upon doing so, a gnome throws a knife at his face that just barely misses him, hitting a nearby cabinet. After Zach is able to definitively conclude that are certainly not friendly, the gnomes turn aggressive and begin shuffling toward the group.
- With help from others, a gnome is able to catapult onto Stine and attach itself to his face before proceeding to whack him with its miniature pickaxe. Soon after, a cluster of gnomes above a cabinet sends a tablecloth fashioned into a rope around Zach's neck and begins to pull upward. Hannah attempts to save her father, but a gnome jumps on her head and yanks on her ponytail, distracting her away from Stine. Zach grabs the rope and tugs downward, removing it from his neck and sending several gnomes off the shelf which shatter on the ground. Champ steps in to help Stine by grabbing a frying pan from the stove and swinging it at the writer's face, destroying the gnome but sending Stine to the ground. Another group of gnomes ambushes Zach; he kicks one away, but it ends up landing in Champ's arms. Champ runs over to the sink and flicks on the garbage disposal before forcing the gnome into the drain. On the floor, while feeling his forehead, several gnomes tie his hands and feet with wire. Meanwhile, after Hannah is able to remove the gnome from her hair, Zach hurls a gnome across the room, nearly hitting Hannah in the head. Zach apologizes. Concurrently, the gnomes manage to open the stove and light a fire inside of it before beginning to drag Stine toward the flame. After Champ destroys the gnome in the garbage disposal, Zach grabs a mop and tells everyone else to get back. He starts hitting the gnomes away from Stine and asks for the help of his peers. Zach ditches the mop and they all throw the remaining gnomes into the fire before shutting the stove's door. The teens untie Stine, but not long after, they witness the gnomes rematerializing and helplessly stare in disbelief as their only exit is once again blocked. However, Zach suddenly tells everyone to flee through the basement door. Stine says that it is locked, but Zach informs him about having picked it. The group rushes downstairs as Stine scolds Zach for breaking into his house. The gnomes chase after them.
- Heading down the basement stairs and with the gnomes close behind, Stine yells to be careful not to step on the bear traps. The group successfully navigates around them, but several gnomes do not. The four of them reach the door and Stine and Zach manage to lock it in the nick of time. Zach snaps at Stine and asks why he wrote a series about monsters as opposed to rainbows or unicorns, with Stine responding that those types of books do not sell over 400 million copies.
- While the group is taking a breather, Stine notices sparks floating through the air. He follows where they are coming from and traces the source of the fire to the front of the driveway. There, the four of them discover the burning, charred remains of the Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes manuscript. Hannah realizes that Slappy is burning every book that he opens. Zach questions why he is doing this, and Stine answers that by doing so, the monsters have no way to get back inside. He states that it is Slappy's revenge, inappropriately remarking that "Slappy's Revenge" sounds like a good book title.
