The Great Mysterio is the main antagonist of the thirty-fifth Give Yourself Goosebumps book, Hocus-Pocus Horror.
Biography[]
The Great Mysterio is a world-famous magician who specializes in acts involving animals.
During the events of Hocus-Pocus Horror, The Great Mysterio comes to your city’s newly built Civic Center to perform, and the reader and Zach decide to watch his show. The show looks innocent at first, with Mysterio transforming a bouquet of flowers into doves, but when the reader and Zach volunteer to be assistants and look backstage, Mysterio is electrocuting and abusing a dog, Ralph, using a electrified steel rod to bark on command, and plans to kill the reader and Zach, saying that “It will be a show to remember for the rest of your lives”. From there on, the reader can either decide to run or hide from the sadistic magician. If the reader decides to run, they will find out that The Great Mysterio owns a suitcase full of magical items, such as a powder that can make anyone invisible and a can that contains a genie that challenges the reader to a spelling bee. If the reader decides to hide, they will encounter Mysterio’s right-hand man, Zoltan.

The Great Mysterio may look like a charismatic showman (given his profession) on the outside at first, but in reality, he is a sadistic individual who abuses animals and is willing to kill his volunteers so they manage to become trapped and part of his phantom audience forever. (as they were all victims of his previous shows) If the reader manages to transform into a monster, Mysterio is proven to be a coward who is afraid of anything that manages to overpower him, as he willingly turns the reader back to save his own skin.
