"The Girl Next Door" is the sixth episode of the second season of the Disney+/Hulu series, Goosebumps.
Synopsis[]
The teens uncover shocking new evidence about the disappearance 30 years ago -- and their parents.
Plot[]
Brooklyn 1994
Matty asks if Hannah is recording everything and she tells him she is. He leads them into the room, saying it's where they allegedly performed medical experiments on people. Sameer doesn't think this is a good idea anymore. The panel sparks and the hole opens in the floor, releasing a gas that hits them. They start coughing. Black goo drips on Matty's face.
Ramona enters her lab, where Anthony's head is on a table next to an arm and a leg. He asks whose body it is. Ramona tells him he had a low-level exposure to a contaminant that is reducing his body to sludge. She pulls out a device and says she's just helping the process along. The other body parts dissolve into goo, which washes down the drain. She says he did this to himself by opening the hatch in the Fort. There's something down there that will destroy the world. Her life's work is to keep it buried, but his family can't leave anything alone. He asks if she killed his brother. When she says no, he asks if she's killing him. She says she's trying to contain him. She points the device at his head and it starts to dissolve like the limbs.
C.J. searches for a box of cables, wondering why everything had so many back in the day. Naomi asks if they're going to watch a movie. Cece reminds her that they're going to watch a home movie of Matty. Frankie questions if it's a good idea for Naomi to watch a video of her dead son. Cece says it might help her dad. Trey brings Frankie water and tells her it's totally okay that she crushed him with his car. He deserved it. He hopes one day to be the kind of guy she'd consider not crushing with a car. C.J. finally gets it hooked up and they watch. It starts with Anthony doing a botany experiment. Matty comes downstairs to tell him they're going to be late to school.
The camera pans over family pictures then comes up behind Naomi, who is startled. She tells Anthony to turn the camera off. He says it's off, but she knows he's lying. Matty comes and takes the camera from him. Their dad comes in and tells them not to mess around with the camera because it was expensive.
Anthony secretly records Matty telling their dad he asked Anthony to borrow the camera for a school project. Their dad says it's okay if it's for school. He can't believe he got talked into buying it for a plant hobby in the first place. Matty defends Anthony's experiments, saying they're actually pretty cool.
Anthony says their dad hates him. Matty says he doesn't hate Anthony. He just doesn't understand him. When he spots Hannah, Matty gives the camera to Anthony and asks him to wish him luck. The tape stops on the image of Hannah.
The teens don't know why the tape stopped. C.J. tries to figure it out. Naomi asks where Matty went and if it's over. Cece tells her it's not over. Naomi says she wants to see Matty. Alex says the tape is just stuck and Matty will be back on soon. C.J. can't get it to work and Frankie asks if anyone has heard from Devin.
Devin meets Hannah at the park, but can't remember why he came there. Hannah says he came so she could take him to Camp Nightmare. He asks why they call it that. Hannah doesn't answer, but leads him away.
C.J. examines the tape. Cece asks Alex why her mom even had the tape. Alex doesn't know except that her mom knew the kids on the tape. Next, Cece wonders why she kept it instead of giving it back to Anthony. Alex doesn't know. Trey quietly tells Frankie that whatever she has to say will be okay. C.J. thinks he's finally figured out the problem. They all admit to being scared. The video continues. It's Sameer introducing himself. Matty asks what he's afraid of and he says nothing. Next is Nicole, who struggles to pick her favorite band. She says she's scared of old people.
Matty goes to Hannah and asks her to be the cameraperson for his top-secret project. Hannah agrees to do it and takes the camera. She asks what they're making. Matty says it's a dare, the most epic of all time. They're going to sleep over at Camp Nightmare. Hannah asks why it's called that. Matty says the government did experiments there, turning people into monsters. Matty asks if Hannah is in. Hannah doesn't think it's a good idea and leaves.
Sameer and Nicole secretly record Matty talking Hannah into going. Jen interrupts them and the camera turns toward her. She asks what they're doing. Jen sees Matty talking to Hannah and asks if he cares to introduce them. Jen is jealous that Hannah is talking to her boyfriend, even though Matty reminds her they broke up. Jen grabs the camera.
Jen records as Hannah peeks out a door and asks where her clothes are. Everything is gone from her locker. She hands the camera to Anthony and she pulls Hannah's clothes out of her bag, throwing them around. Matty asks Jen what's wrong with her and says she's pathetic. Jen heard they were going to Camp Nightmare. She says Hannah can't just come to a new school and steal someone's boyfriend. Joe Jr. thought it was funny. Matty sees Anthony recording and says to stop.
Jen finds Matty, who says he doesn't want to talk to her because she was mean to Hannah. She says it was just a joke. She wants him to admit it was funny. She wants to go with them to Camp Nightmare, but he says she's not invited. Jen grabs the camera and tells Matty she hopes he dies at Camp Nightmare and Hannah does, too.
C.J. comments that now they know why Jen hid the tape.
Devin stops as they walk toward the Fort. He can't remember how they got there. She reminds him they're going to Camp Nightmare and he asks why. Hannah says they're going like his friend was. Everyone will end up there soon enough. She says to follow her, but he isn't sure he wants to go. She looks at him and tell shim he does want to go. He repeats that he wants to go and follows her.
Alex thinks she and her mom aren't so different. Cece says Alex isn't like that, but Alex says Cece doesn't know her that well. Trey says people can change. C.J. asks if he should keep playing it. They decide on yes. Trey asks Frankie if the thing she needs to tell him is about Devin. She nods.
Anthony flies Matty, who is looking for a flashlight. He asks if it's true, what Jen said about them going to Camp Nightmare. He says it's dangerous. Matty says not to worry. The story that's out there isn't even the true story. He's going to be fine. Anthony has a bad feeling about it. He says he's going to tell on Matty, but Matty just wants to play Ping Pong. Matty says he needs to do this because he won't be a scientist like Anthony. He'll be the guy who was pretty good at sports and had good hair in high school who gets a job working for his dad. Anthony says he's smart. He asks Matty not to go. Matty agrees to think about it.
Hannah joins Sameer, Matty, and Nicole as they get ready to go to the Fort. She thanks Matty for sticking up for her and takes the camera. Sameer tells her he's Team Jen, but then admits he's kidding. He's glad Matty finally moved on from her. Anthony comes to them and asks Matty not to go and tries to go with them when Matty refuses. Matty sends him home. Then he tells his friends they'll be legends if they do this. No matter what else they do, they'll always have this.
They hear a noise as they walk. It scares Sameer. It's just a bunny. They spot the Fort in the distance.
Naomi yells at the television for Matty not to go in there. Cece calms her down with Nurse Cameron's help. Cameron says whatever they're watching is upsetting her. She's taking Naomi back to her room and says the teens need to leave. Once they're gone, Cece tells C.J. to fast forward so they can get through it quickly. As he does so, Frankie says it's hard to watch knowing what happens next. They realize they don't really know what happens next. C.J. plays the tape as they find Anthony following them. He fast forwards again. Cece has him play it when she sees the room where their clothes were found. Frankie covers her eyes. The panel sparks and the whole opens up in the floor. Matty says they're leaving, but then his face becomes black good. The camera cuts out on a shot of Hannah lying on the floor.
Hannah wakes up and looks around. She calls to Matty, Nicole, and Sameer. She picks up the camera and looks around for them. She finds a door with a window and points the camera at it. She starts when something clatters. She steps in some black goo and follows it up to find Matty encased in it. She screams. Next to him are Sameer and Nicole. A door open and Hannah runs and hides as a monster tries to find her. She runs again when the monster finds her. She tries some doors, but they don't open. The monster finally drags Hannah away from the camera as a person in a protective suit watches. The person then closes the hole in the floor and flees as Anthony comes in looking for Matty. Anthony discovers the clothes. Jen comes in behind him and he tells her they're gone. She thinks Matty's messing with them, but Anthony doesn't think so. He wants to call the cops, but Jen reminds him that they're trespassing. As he leaves, she grabs the camera and turns it off.
Cece is horrified. C.J. says Fort Jerome is full of monsters. Trey remembers being in a pod like they were. Seeing them sparked the memory. Cece asks what they means for her dad. She wonders if he's in a pod like that. Alex thinks since Trey is fine, Anthony will be fine as well. Cece says they need to find Devin. Frankie pulls out her phone to text him. C.J. recognizes the woman in the suit from the end as the woman he saw at the hospital. Frankie says she was the doctor, but she told C.J. she didn't work at the hospital. Frankie gets a text from Devin saying he's at Camp Nightmare. She tells the others. Cece has her call him.
Devin's phone rings. Hannah gets him to ignore the call as they arrive at Fort Jerome.
Cece says Devin was going to meet Hannah and they connect her to the girl in the video. Cece doesn't think it could be the same person, but the others think with everything else, it's possible. C.J. ejects the tape and they all leave.
Devin and Hannah stand at the edge of the roof of Fort Jerome. He thinks he should call Cece. Hannah says they have to find his dad and the others. They have to jump. It's the only way to save his dad. Cece, C.J., Trey, Alex, and Frankie come up behind them and Cece tells Devin to stop. She tells him to walk off the ledge. Hannah says he has to follow her. He says it's okay, that they have to jump. Cece says there's no one there. Devin turns toward her and she says that Hannah is one of the kids who was with their uncle the night he died. It was on the tape. The girl he sees isn't real. Devin turns to Hannah, who tells him he can only see her because the process has started in him. He's lucky he survived. She tells him not to follow her as she jumps off the cliff, dissolving into black goo. Trey pulls Devin back away from the ledge. Cece hugs him. Devin doesn't know what just happened. Cece thinks they need to go talk to whatever is in the basement. They all leave.
Trey notices Devin has been quiet and asks if he's okay. He says he definitely isn't. Trey feels bad about what's happened because he feels like he started it. Devin tells him not to worry about it. Trey says whatever happens between Devin and Frankie, he won't be a jerk about it.
C.J. asks Frankie if Devin and Trey are becoming friends. She thinks so and finds it disturbing.
Alex says her mom always treats her like a criminal and she's a cop who hid evidence. Cece says she's not her mom. Alex thinks she messes everything up, but Cece doesn't think so. Alex says she messed up everything they had going on, but Cece shares responsibility for that. Cece doesn't know how much time they have left, so she wants to work on un-messing things up before anything else can happen. She leans in and kisses Alex. Then they join the others as they arrive at home. Devin and Cece have the others wait on the porch while they go inside. Trey stands at the door to listen. He thinks they should have made up a signal to use. Frankie suggests help.
Cece and Devin don't find their dad in the basement, so they start looking around for him. Cece goes to look upstairs.
C.J. asks if Cece and Devin took weapons inside. He starts to make a plan when Devin and Cece come out and tell them their dad isn't there. There's no sign of him anywhere. Frankie doesn't understand, as he couldn't have gone anywhere. Devin says the woman took him. He has footage from the doorbell camera of her entering the house and then coming out with a suitcase. They wonder where she would take him.
Ramona steps back up to the table and says that was a day. The goo drips into the drain.
At Fort Jerome, Anthony is encased in a pod.
