Monica Anderson
|
Monica Anderson is a red-haired, fairly small, twelve-year-old girl from the city of Hillcrest. She tells the story. |
Masks of Screem

These living masks were created by the sorcerer Hallow a century before Monica's story takes place. Screem protects the masks, while Belladonna tries to steal them. |
Peter Anderson
|
Peter is Monica's ten-year-old, blond-haired brother. He is tall and hyper-active. |
Mrs. Anderson and Mr. Anderson
|
Monica and Peter's mother and father dissapear early in the story, forcing the children to embark on a journey to save them. Mrs. Anderson is small and thin, like her daughter. Meanwhile, Mr. Anderson is tall, like his son. |
Caroline and Regina
|
Caroline and Regina are two of Monica's friends. They go trick-or-treating with her, but they don't care for her brother. |
Belladonna
|
Originally introduced as Bella, Belladonna is an evil sorceress. She tricks the protagonists into trying to help her. She is named after atropa belladonna, a poisonous plant that is commonly known as deadly nightshade. |
Hallow
|
A dead sorcerer who created five powerful, magic masks and a book that can be used to predict and change the future. |
Dr. Screem
|
Dr. Screem is a white-haired sorcerer. He is also in charge of protecting the masks created by Hallow from Belladonna. |
Klein family
|
Though only described briefly, the Klein family is said to be the next-door neighbors of the Anderson family. Mrs. Klein is the girls' basketball coach at Hillcrest Middle School, Mr. Klein travels regularly, and their daughter — Phoebe — is in preschool. |
