Synopsis[]
As Anthony continues his research, Trey breaks into his basement lab, unleashing unexpected horrors.
Plot[]
Anthony sleeps on the basement floor, still a giant blueberry. He wakes up and tries calling for help but cant speak. He feels pain in his stomach and theres so much juice his skin opens and juice rushes out until hes normal and no longer has blue skin either.
Frankie wakes up and looks at the picture of herself and Trey on her bedside table. She tells the picture she's done with Trey. She never wants to see his face again. She goes around her room, removing all the pictures of him. Her mom, Lucia, comes in and tells her she's going to the hospital to work a double shift. She left dinner for Frankie but Frankie will need to buy some milk. She asks what Frankie is doing with the pictures and Frankie says the other night was the last straw. She's going to tell him it's over. Lucia doesn't believe her, but leaves to go to work.
At Junior & Junior's Pit Stop, Joe Jr. gives directions to Trey, who is on his phone and ignoring his father. Trey says he knows, but Joe Jr. has to keep cleaning up his messes. Joe Jr. doesn't know what Trey's college classes are teaching him. Trey says they're teaching him business, which will be good for all of them. He points out that Trey has a visitor and Trey turns to see Frankie. She asks to talk to him privately. Trey tells her his father can't hear anything from where he is and proves it by making an outlandish statement. When she says it's serious, he asks if she's still angry about the other night. He doesn't think she can be because time has passed. She reminds him that Devin was really freaked out by it. Trey thinks it was funny, but Frankie disagrees. She doesn't like when Trey is like this and thinks they aren't good together. Trey immediately steps up and says he's just really stressed right now and needs to be able to show her his authentic self. He does so much for her, like getting his degree so he can build up the business. He's trying to be the guy she deserves. She tells him she's not coming at him, but he thinks she needs to take a long, hard look at her side of the relationship because he thinks he's really trying. Frankie knows that and she's trying to be supportive. Trey says to try harder because they're meant to be together. He kisses her and says he loves her. She says she loves him, too, but she can't do it anymore.
Frankie opens up the coffee shop and goes inside.
Cece asks Devin about being pulled into a sewer. He says it's foggy, like the other night. He wonders if it's dementia like their grandma. Cece says it's not dementia. This is different. He begs her not to tell their dad. They step inside the coffee shop and Cece orders kombucha from Frankie. Frankie teases her about it and then admits they don't carry kombucha. But they have coffee. Devin pulls YooHoo out of the cooler and offers it to Cece, but Cece refuses. Cece leaves to get to camp, leaving her umbrella for Devin, who forgot his. Once she's gone, Frankie apologizes for the other night and says it's why she and Trey broke up. He asks her about that, but she doesn't really want to talk about it. She asks him what he wants and he delays before ordering a fancy drink that she doesn't have. She says he can have a regular coffee if he helps her dump out the bucket of roof water. He takes the bucket from her.
On her way to camp, Cece runs into Alex, who is doing community service, picking up trash. Alex asks if she just argues a lot and thinks maybe she should go to the camp as well. Cece uses the excuse of being late to leave, but looks back at Alex as she goes. Alex rolls her eyes when Jen pulls up. She asks if Alex has heard anything about a break-in at the old port. Someone vandalized a transformer. Alex says she's only been back one day and she's being harassed by the cops. Jen reminds her she didn't answer the question. Alex says she just got out of juvie and wonders if Jen thinks she's dumb enough to do something like that and risk going back. Jen doesn't want Alex to go back, which is why she's making sure. Alex thinks maybe Jen should have thought of that before putting Alex there in the first place, revealing that Jen is her mother. Jen says that's not exactly what happened, but that's how Alex remembers it. Alex says she has to leave because she has a day job and goes back to her work.
Trey carries a stuffed animal and practices what he's going to say to Frankie. He sees Frankie step outside with Devin and hug him, so he walks away, throwing the stuffed animal in the trash.
Anthony asks Patti if she analyzed the data he sent. He thinks it might be related to his brother. She says that was thirty years ago and asks what he means. Anthony explains that the police report said they died skinny dipping, but Anthony was there that night. The tunnel was the only way in or out, meaning no one else the room that night. He finally got Matty's hoodie back from the police and he found residual organic matter on it, like mold or spores. That's what created the plant bulb he pulled out of his arm. He wants her to help him identify the species. Patti says it's not a plant. It's an animal, a carnivorous one. Anthony looks over at the bulb, which is resting in a tray. He tells Patti he'll call her back.
Anthony leaves the basement and locks the door. He finds Devin in the dining room and Devin claims he's job searching. Anthony says he's researching animals. He leaves to go to the pet store and asks if Devin needs anything. Devin says no, since they don't have any pets. Anthony apologizes to Devin for the previous night, saying he just didn't want Devin in the basement because he's working on some sensitive projects. Devin says he made that clear. Anthony tells Devin a bad plant job and then leaves. Once he's gone, Devin opens his laptop and continues reading a page about dementia. He video calls Cece and questions where she is when she answers. She tells him not to worry about it and asks what he needs. Devin tells her he's reading about dementia and he has all the signs. He knows it sounds crazy, but he sees Uncle Matty's face when he closes his eyes. Cece tells him to go talk to their dad, but Devin refuses. There's a knock at the door, so Devin ends the call to go answer it.
Trey is waiting when Devin goes out to the porch. He says he knows what Devin is doing, trying to steal Frankie. Devin says Frankie isn't his girl or his property. Trey hits Devin in the face and turns to leave. Devin tackles him from behind, knocking him to the ground. They fight until Frankie pulls Trey off him. When he asks her if she's defending her new boyfriend, Frankie tells Trey there's nothing between them. Trey says he saw them and warns Devin to stay away from Frankie. Frankie shoves Trey toward his house, telling him to go home. Devin tells Frankie he's glad they broke up, but questions what she was ever doing with a guy like Trey. She has so much going for her. Frankie says she and Devin aren't the same. Her mom works all the time and she doesn't have her dad anymore. She doesn't have anyone to catch her if she falls. She's 18 and she can't study fashion because she can't afford college. He doesn't know anything about her that he hasn't learned by stalking her knitting on TikTok. Devin reminds her that she said that wasn't weird, but she admits it is very weird as she walks away. Devin turns to look at the manhole cover and has flashes of memories of being in the sewer.
Anthony comes home to find Trey's car again in his driveway. He asks Trey to come move it. Trey says he'll move it in a minute. Anthony says Trey is trespassing and it's not harassment for him to say that. Trey says it feels like he is. Anthony takes a shovel out of his back seat and says he is harassing Trey, starting right now. He uses it to break Trey's driver-side window. He goes around to the other kind and asks if Trey's going to move his car, threatening to break the window on the other side. Trey says he'll move it. He quietly whispers that Anthony will pay for this as he gets into the car.
Anthony records himself talking about the animal. He has dead mice to attempt to feed it, trying to determine if it's really carnivorous. The animal refuses to eat it initially, but then opens up into a blossom and takes the mouse. Anthony puts on a glove and grabs a trash can lid. He moves the animal into a chest freezer, but thinks he might need something bigger.
As Anthony goes to leave, he runs into Devin, who is returning home. He was buying flashlights. Anthony says they have tons of flashlights, but they're in the basement, where Devin isn't allowed to go. Anthony asks Devin what he thinks they do with dogs they euthanize at the pound. He needs meat, a lot of it. C.J. suggests trying the butcher. It's where they get all the meat for the restaurant. As Anthony goes to check on that, C.J. delivers all of Devin's egg rolls, which Devin says makes it sound like he ate some of them. Devin hands them back, saying he doesn't even want them. As C.J. starts to eat them, Devin explains that he needs help with something.
Devin and C.J. remove the manhole cover and enter the sewer. C.J. informs Devin that what they're doing is illegal, but goes with him anyway. Devin promises to take all the blame.
Frankie finds Trey sneaking around Anthony's house and asks what he's doing. Trey tells her about Anthony breaking his window. His dad is angry, so he needs to fix the window tonight. He's there to get payback against the whole family. Frankie warns him not to do it, saying he can get into trouble. Trey says it's self-defense, but Frankie tells him it isn't. He says there's an open window and he breaks one to make that true. He tells Frankie she's pretty interested in what he's doing for someone who is done with him. She leaves and Trey goes inside the basement through the window.
Trey thinks Anthony is growing weed in the basement. He knocks some plants off the shelves. He finds the box of dead mice and says Anthony's freak. Then he pulls down an entire shelf. He takes pictures of himself with the damage he's done in the background. He stops when he hears the chest freezer open. He says that's not good as the animal inside grabs him and pulls him in.
Devin stops and remembers being trapped by the plant. He tells C.J. something happened where they are. He puts his hand in the water below them, despite C.J. telling him it's toilet water. After a search, Devin pulls up a root.
Frankie steps up to the window Trey broke and calls quietly for him, asking if he's still in there and warning him that he better get out. When he doesn't answer, she climbs in. The window closes behind her, trapping her in. She looks around at the damaged lab and calls Trey's phone. She hears it vibrating and sees it on the floor nearby. She picks it up and calls for Trey again. As she climbs the basement stairs, the chest freezer opens again. She knocks on the door, calling for Anthony. When she hears glass break, she goes back down the stairs. As she walks around, a hand emerges from a shelf and brushes her shoulder. She turns and asks who it is. As it emerges, she sees that it's covered in the same black goop that was on Devin's eyes. She screams.
Devin thinks he heard a scream, so C.J. decides he's done and goes back to the exit. He climbs up, followed by Devin, who is asking if C.J. heard the scream, too. C.J. says it could have come from anywhere and gets on his moped. There's an odd smell and he realizes it's them. Devin says they'll be fine eventually. C.J. has to make his deliveries and tells Devin he'll never help him again. Devin opens the front door to his house, revealing the creature standing there. It knocks him to the ground. As he comes to, he calls for Frankie.
Anthony comes home, carrying a large wrapped package. He goes toward the basement and is horrified that the door is open. He drops the meat and runs downstairs. When he sees the damage, he calls for Cece and Devin. His phone rings and he answers it. It's Patti, who tells him it could be a new species. He needs to bring the specimen in so they can verify the results. Anthony goes over to the chest freezer and opens it to find the creature gone and Trey's hoodie in its place. He hangs up on Patti and picks up Trey's clothes. Cece comes down the stairs, asking why there's a dead goat in the living room. He yells for her not to come into the basement. She turns and goes back upstairs.
Frankie wakes up at Junior & Junior's Pit Stop. She sees the creature nearby, looking through tool boxes, and begs it not to hurt her. The creature talks to her and she realizes it's Trey, asking for help. She asks him what happened and what she can do to help. He hands her a tool to scrap off the goo covering him. After a few tries, she says it's not working and she doesn't know what else to try. Trey starts to panic and pull at it. Frankie tells him to calm down and they'll figure it out together. Frankie hears Devin in the distance calling for her. He is running toward the garage, but stops when Trey goes for him. He pulls out a pipe and tells Trey to stay away from Frankie. He hits Trey with the pipe, but it does nothing. Trey then grabs Devin and throws him. Frankie tries to help him but he tells her to get out of there. Frankie ignores that and tells Trey to stop going after him. Then she lowers a car onto Trey as Devin rolls out of the way. Frankie tells Devin the creature was Trey, showing him Trey's chain, which was left on the ground. But it doesn't make any sense. Devin says a lot of things don't make sense right now. He leads Frankie away as the remains of Trey start to recompose. Trey's car starts and the driver's window is magically repaired.
