Synopsis[]
Cece's anxiety spikes while trying to maintain her perfect image, leading to a sticky situation.
Plot[]
One Month Ago
Cece applies her makeup in her room, where she's surrounded by awards and trophies. Then she stands in front of the mirror, debating how to wear her shirt. Finally, she grabs her bag and leaves.
Devin is playing a video game when Cece comes in and asks if their mom left. Devin tells her she's at therapy. Cece is upset that Devin just gets to hang out all day while everyone else goes to school because he's suspended. She finds it strange that he's spending the day he's suspended for fighting playing a virtual fighting game. Devin thinks the school needs to rethink their discipline policy. They exchange teasing banter as Devin realizes how much effort Cece has put into looking like she didn't put in effort.
Iris talks about taking the Wall Street fellowship her dad wanted her to take. It's about empowering young women through crypto. Aisha is impressed and says this is the most important summer of their lives. Harper has gotten into the Iowa Young Writers Program. Harper still thinks she needs more STEM on her resume. Cece tells them she's going to be spending the entire summer at her dad's. Harper reminds her that she gets to commute in for her debate camp. Cece says that's if she gets in. Aisha says she's never lost. Cece has to leave to meet with her debate coach. She's sure he wants to give her the news personally.
Cece tells her debate coach she's started preparing for the program, making a list of books to read and re-read. Her debate coach says he's sorry, but she didn't get in. She thinks he's joking, but he's not. Debate is about more than winning. She starts to breathe heavily as he tells her it's not the end of the world.
Cece walks outside and screams.
Present Day
Cece listens to a voicemail from her mom, reminding her of her alumni interview. It'll be worth missing debate camp because there's a lot riding on it. As she listens, she gets in the fridge and pulls out a loaf of bread. She asks her dad about it and he just says to cut off the mold, but she refuses. Anthony wanted to drive Cece into the city for her interview, but he has to go to the hospital to check on Trey. Devin and Frankie are already there. Anthony starts to tell her what Trey came into contact with, but stops himself. Cece says it kind of looks bad for him to go to the hospital after everything that's happened with Trey. He understands, but he's going anyway. Cece says it's okay that he can't take her for the interview. He says she'll nail it because she nails everything. She says that's her whole thing. He reminds her to take her stun gun when she leaves.
Jen still wants to talk to Alex about what happened yesterday. Alex asks why because they found Trey. Jen says it's not about Trey. It's about his car. She wants to talk as a mother, not a cop and she says there's a difference. She's there when Alex is ready to talk and asks Alex to be careful. There's a lot of weird stuff going on. Alex asks if she can be more specific about the weird stuff and Jen asks if Alex can be more specific about Trey's car. Alex sees Cece walking across the street and says goodbye. She calls out to Cece, who asks if she's there to finish her off. Alex wants to explain, but Cece doesn't have time for that. Alex says it wasn't her fault. Something's messed up about that car. Cece is the only person she can talk to about this. Cece says she has to go. Alex gives her her kombucha cup back and asks why she loves kombucha so much. Cece says it relaxes her. She leaves as Alex joins her work crew.
Devin finds Frankie asleep in a chair in Trey's room. He tries to wake her, but she doesn't stir. Trey's eyes are open, but he doesn't react to Devin waving a hand in front of his face. He accidentally knocks the monitor off Trey's finger and the beeping wakes Frankie as Devin struggles to put the monitor back on. She didn't realize she'd fallen asleep. He shows her the coffee he brought her. It's lukewarm. He also brought her knitting stuff. It's really stressful not to know what's going on. She thought she killed Trey. Devin asks if there are any updates. Frankie says no, he hasn't said anything or responded to anything. She's not even sure why she's there. But Devin thinks Trey appreciates it. Any guy would. Ramona Pamani comes in and sends them to the waiting room so she can examine Trey. Once they're gone, she tells Trey this will all be behind him soon enough.
Jen sees Anthony standing outside the hospital and tells him he can't be there. Joe Jr. will kill him if he sees him. Anthony says it's bigger than Joe Jr. The organic matter from the hoodie grew and attacked him and Devin and he's pretty sure it's what attacked Trey. That's why he needs to be there when Jen questions Trey. It'll help him finally understand what happened to Matty. Jen doesn't think that'll happen. She studied the case for years. It's why she became a cop in the first place. Anthony reminds her that he saved Trey's life and doesn't see the harm in being there when he's questioned. Jen acquiesces, but says she'll do the talking.
Jen leads Anthony to Trey's room where she introduces herself. Ramona says investigating will be difficult because he's displaying symptoms of PTSD. He's aware of what's happening, but he can't process it. Jen asks when he might talk again because she has questions. Ramona says he has traumatic mutism and there's really no time frame. It could be years even. Anthony asks if she noticed any physical damage to his body. Jen reminds him of their deal. Ramona asks if he's Jen's partner and she says no. He's just a concerned botanist. Ramona says doctor-patient confidentiality doesn't extend to botanists and leaves. Jen is upset with Anthony for his questions. All they can do is sit and wait. Anthony pretends to go to the bathroom, so Jen leaves. Then Anthony returns to Trey's room and holds out the petri dish. The goo inside doesn't react to Trey.
Ramona takes off her lab coat and throws it in the trash. C.J. sees her and asks if she knows where the ICU is. She says no, that she doesn't work there.
Outside, Anthony sees the petri dish start to respond to something. He sees Ramona get in a car nearby.
Cece enters a coffee shop and orders kombucha, handing over her cup to fill. Behind her, Harper calls out to her. Aisha and Iris are there as well. Cece reminds them that she's staying with her dad all summer. Aisha asks about her debate camp being close to her dad's. They ask how it's going. She lies and says it's great and she's ranked number one.
Behind the counter, the worker fills Cece's cup, but there's something else in it.
Aisha is working in a computer lab. And Harper is preparing her memoir. She's hoping to get it out by next spring. They notice Cece seems off and ask if she's okay. She says she's fine, but she needs to leave for a college interview with Kathryn Bosco at Brown. They immediately know how big that is. If she impresses Kathryn, she's guaranteed a spot. The cashier holds up Cece's drink, so she gets up, takes it, and takes a large swig.
Cece walks and drinks her kombucha. She finishes as she arrives for her interview.
Kathryn offers Cece some water and asks which one she is. She opens a folder and reads that Cece's a swimmer. Cece's interjects to correct that she's Cece Brewer. Tori Brewer is her mother. Cece's a debater and Kathryn was as well. Cece knows about Kathryn's history in debate because they still talk about her. The rules were changed because of her. Kathryn asks what Cece's story is. She only has seven minutes to hear it. Cece starts to list off her accomplishments. Kathryn asks about the debate camp. As Cece answers, she burps. As she tries to continue, it happens again. She takes a drink of water, but Kathryn says her nose is bleeding. She hands Cece some tissues and calls for a first aid kit. Cece pulls the tissues back and sees that it's not blood. She looks in a mirror as the goo goes back up her nostril and she screams in pain. She walks out in a daze.
Cece gets to a sink and vomits. It's all black goo. She says she's done with kombucha and washes it down the drain.
Devin and Frankie get snacks from the vending machine. Alex comes up to them and asks where she can find Trey. Frankie says he's in shock and not speaking. Alex asks if it's about his car. Frankie and Devin asks what she knows about his car, but she gives them the same question. Alex admits to borrowing it. She knows they know something about it and she wants to know. Devin gets a call. It's Cece, who says she doesn't remember anything. She's at their mom's apartment. Devin asks why she isn't back from debate camp. Cece admits that she lied and didn't actually get in. But she's calling because she doesn't know how she got to the apartment. She was at the interview and then all of a sudden, she was at the apartment. Devin asks if she heard a hum and she says she did. Devin tells her to stay put and he's going to come to her. Devin tells Frankie they need to leave right now and she goes with him. C.J. arrives right then and is relieved to see someone he recognizes. His parents sent some free food, so he gives some to Alex.
Cece waits for Devin. She goes into the bathroom and gargles mouthwash. Black goo comes up through the drain after she turns away. She hears it and turns back as it overflows the sink. She leaves the bathroom, but it oozes under the door. She hits it with a lamp, but it continues oozing. She then pulls her stun gun out of her bag and zaps it repeatedly. She makes it out to the hallway, where Bob is complaining about the noise. She tells him there's something in her apartment. She pushes him back into his apartment and closes his door, then calls the elevator. The black goo continues to ooze toward her. When she elevator opens, she falls inside. She hits the button and the doors close just before the goo reaches her. She sighs in relief and then hears a thud. The goo is in the elevator shaft. It stops on the seventh floor, leaving Cece trapped as it oozes in. Devin and Frankie pry open the door and call for Cece to grab their hands. Cece doesn't hear them because she's having a panic attack. She finally hears them and they help her out of the elevator. They get her out just as the elevator falls down the shaft. Devin tells her that wasn't her kombucha and they need to get out of there.
Cece asks Devin not to give her a hard time just this once. He can't believe she lied about debate camp. She says a giant killer blob was just after her and that's what he's worried about. He asks why she didn't tell him. She asks why he didn't tell her that their dad was behind everything weird that was happened. Devin says they don't know for sure that he is. Cece finally says she didn't want to admit that she'd failed at something or see the look on his face, the look of pity. He says he's not looking at her with pity. He's looking at her like a person. For once, it feels like they're actually twins. She's always been the perfect twin and he's always been the opposite. But now she's a mess like he is. He's never felt closer to her. He hugs her. The train comes and Frankie, Cece, and Devin get on.
Devin thanks Frankie for coming. She thanks him for spending the day at the hospital with him. Suddenly, the train stops and the emergency lights come on. Cece looks out the window and says it's there. A window breaks and the goo pours in. Cece realizes it's following her. She runs through train cars as the goo follows. She exits the train. When she gets stuck, she sees the third rail and remembers her father's advice to bring a stun gun in case things go south. She jumps down onto the tracks and runs along them. She sees a spark and walks around it. A train horn honks in the distance. When the goo hits the spark, it freezes. Then the train runs into it. Cece jumps clear of the tracks just before the train comes by.
Joe Jr. says Trey just woke up an hour ago and is still out of it. Jen tells him to take his time. She asks him what happened the night he went missing. Trey doesn't remember anything about the night. Jen asks if he really can't remember anything, even a little detail, like a plant. The last thing Trey remembers, he was outside Devin's place talking to Frankie. Jen says that's good and asks if there's anything else. Trey says he's sorry, but he doesn't know. Jen says they can take a break. Trey asks where Frankie is.
Devin, Frankie, and Cece's Lyft driver, Zach, doesn't think he has the right spot, but they tell him it's right even though it's the middle of nowhere. He asks if they're sure they'll be okay. Devin says he's not sure, so Zach asks them to give him five stars before anything happens. Devin does just that as Cece approaches the gate at Fort Jerome. Frankie leans in and kisses Devin. Cece interrupts, telling them it's time to go. They open the gate and walk inside. They need to figure out what's happening and the answers are in the room where it started.
They're walking through the tunnel when they see a light from a flashlight and realize someone else is there. They watch as Anthony walks by, wearing a protective suit. Frankie thinks it's proof that their dad is behind everything.
