Mistress Barbarous (briefly mistakenly referred to as Mistress Barbara by the protagonist) is the evil ringmaster of a cursed circus and the main antagonist of the third Special Edition book of Give Yourself Goosebumps book series, Trapped in the Circus of Fear.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Most, if not all, of Mistress Barbarous' life prior to the book is left ambiguous. Pieces of her history have been uncovered. She is the ringmaster of the Circus of Fear and at some point, gained a magic pendant that gave her power. It's unknown how she came by this power or if it was before or after she became a ringmaster.
Mistress Barbarous, along with the rest of her family, started gradually kidnapping children from different towns and cities to serve as new attractions for the circus and used their magic to ensure that they would never be able to leave by transforming them into freaks. She also plans to trap the reader into a jar of goop.
Their list of victims would eventually grow to include Danny Mendleson and Merrill Thornbush, both of whom would become the Lizard Boy and the Girl with Five Tongues.
Trapped in the Circus of Fear[]
Mistress Barbarous is shown to be as sadistic as her name suggests. After transforming them, she erases evidence of the children's existence. She also appears to be a cannibal, as she is implied to eat the reader in one ending. In the best ending, she is turned into a chimpanzee, while the reader and the other kids take control of the circus. The reader also has an elephant step on the pendant, (presumably) ensuring that she'll stay a chimpanzee forever.

Barbarous is very cruel and sadistic, taking great joy in tormenting children and having them killed or turned into freaks for her circus. It can be inferred that her only motives are making money from her circus freak show by turning children into more freaks to add new attractions, and the sheer sadistic joy she takes in performing her evil deeds. She has no honor and refuses to keep her word to let you go even if you do give her an item that she likes in one of the endings. She is also a cannibal, as she eats the reader in one of the bad endings.
