Character Description
Slappy the Dummy

Slappy is an evil ventriloquist dummy carved out of the wood of a cursed coffin. He narrates the introduction and epilogue of this book. Aside from that, he doesn’t appear in the story, not interfering with the characters.
Judy Glassman

She's an adventurous twelve-year old girl who lives with her family in Sulphur Falls, a small town in Wyoming that's located at the bottom of a big icy mountain. She's the protagonist and narrator of this story.
Ira Glassman

Ira is Judy's older brother. He's fifteen years old and spends most of his free time building and carving wooden monsters and creepy creatures.
Noah Glassman

He's Judy and Ira's father. He works as a carpenter and some of his friends call him Walrus because of his physical appearance - he's short, round, and white-haired, and he has a white mustache which droops down the sides of his mouth, like walrus tusks.
Baker and Hilda Grendel

A strange, rich old couple who lives in a huge mysterious mansion at the top of the mountain. Every year in the spring, Mr. Glassman travels there for a week to repair furniture and do other carpentry work for them.
Mrs. Hardwell

She's the Glassmans' housekeeper. She's extremely strict and serious, which leads to Judy strongly disliking her. She has very tiny eyes and short, straight black hair.
Harvard

Harvard is the Grendels' butler, a short bald man with serious eyes. He warns Judy to be careful around the Grendel house.
Dr. Enright

He helps Mr. Glassman after he falls from the roof. He's a young man with wavy blond hair and shiny blue eyes.
Unnamed boys

Two boys Judy finds at the Grendels' mansion in different occasions. They're both around fifteen or sixteen. One of them is very tall and thin, and the other has straight blond hair and a round face.
