|

Monty's mother. She's a zoologist that works at a university. For most of the book, she is away in the jungles of Borneo, studying orangutans. Monty says she loves adventure. |

|
The protagonist of the book. Monty's spending a year with his uncle Leo and cousin, Nan, while his mother is away on research. As Monty settles into life in Mortonville, strange things begin to happen as it seems someone who looks just like him is running around and getting him into trouble. |

Monty's cousin. She and Monty get along well, both sharing an interest in the piano. It is later revealed that Nan is actually Monty's twin sister, who was given to Leo to raise after she was born. |

Monty's teacher. When he asks her about where he should sit, she tells him she already assigned him a seat when they met the previous week. This is strange to Monty, as he's never even met Ms. Eckstat before. |

However, when Monty arrives, Ashley is hysterical and says that he trashed the room with paints, despite the fact that he was in a class at the time. |

An evil clone of Leo that begins creating Monty clones in secret. The real Leo tries to keep his creation a secret, but it ends up overpowering him and trapping him in a lab closet. |

Three of Leo's college roommates that Nan retrieves to help deal with the clone situation. They help board the clones onto a truck headed for South America. The tallest of them is named Fred. |
