Kelli is one of the two protagonists of this book. She's twelve, and she enjoys watching horror movies and scaring her little brother, Shawn. She hates the idea of having to move to Florida, leaving all her friends behind. |

|
He is Kelli's younger brother. He is very easily scared, so Kelli decides to terrify him so badly that their father would decide against moving to Florida. |
| Becka Munroe and Donny Albert

Becka and Munroe are two fictional characters from Swamp Monster III, the horror movie Kelli and Shawn watch at the beginning. They are in tenth grade, and they're dating each other. In the movie, they steal a boat and venture into the swamp at night, only to then being attacked and killed by a swamp monster. |

Kelli's and Shawn's father. After separating from their mother - who doesn't actually appear in the book - he and the children move from New York to a swamp in Florida. He's a marine biologist who is repeatedly annoyed by Kelli's insistence regarding stories about Swamp Monsters. |

The Shaggedy is a huge creature who lives somewhere in the swamps of Florida. He has red reptil-like skin, covered in brown fur. When summoned by someone, the Shaggedy will do whatever they command him to do, as well as help them if necessary. To keep his existence a secret to as many people as possible, he shapeshifts into two young twins called Zeke and Decker. They are both blond and have blue eyes. |

Ms. Rawls is Kelli and Shawn's teacher at their new school. She is one of only three teachers working there. She's young and pretty, with brown hair and dark eyes. |

Initially believed to be a weird old swamp hermit, Saul is later revealed to be a federal agent sent to Florida on Monster Watch. He is tall and skinny and has cold, grey eyes. He also has a scraggly white beard and long hair, which he wears in a ponytail. |

Mrs. Klavan is another teacher in Kelli and Shawn's school. |
