Goosebumps Live on Stage was a theatre production that ran several shows from September to December 6th, 1998 [1]. The show is based on an original story by Rupert Holmes[2] and was presented by Feld Entertainment.

Synopsis[]

Four children, Jessie, Josh, Jamie, and Skate are enjoying a game of basketball, after which the quartet head home. They are near the Doomsday Bookshop, figuring that they could use a phone inside. As they walk in they see an animatronic gorilla transform into an old-man. The old man introduces himself as Mr. Gander. He tells the kids that even thought he is old he still has the heart of a young person, and he pulls out a box and opens it to reveal a mummified heart. Mr. Gander then hands Josh a phone and he calls his dad, but he doesn't pick up the phone. Josh then leaves a message explaining where they are staying. Jessie spies on Slappy then picks up a leatherbound special edition Goosebumps book and asks to look at it. Then Mr. Gander tells Jessie that his name means male goose and then tells her that she can't look inside the book. The special-edition Goosebumps book came with special magic lantern slides, which Mr. Gander will use to tell stories while the kids are waiting for their parents.

Production[]

The stage show was written and directed by Rupert Holmes and was produced by Feld Entertainment. The show made its world premiere performances in Pensacola, Florida in September 1998 before abruptly ending a mere three months later on December 6, 1998 in Columbus, Ohio. While the show was received positively by those in attendance[3], the show lost a lot of money in development and had experienced weak ticket sales, leading to its cancellation ahead of several other planned shows.[4]

Trivia[]

  • Unlike other Goosebumps stage shows, Live on Stage is notable for having no known recordings of the show available online, thus deeming the show “Lost Media”.
    • Despite this, footage of the show was showcased during a Rupert Holmes segment of VH1’s Where Are They Now?. [5]
    • Additionally, at least two recordings of the show were taped by Feld Entertainment for promotional purposes but are unwilling to release it due to legal reasons, as revealed in an episode of the Goosebumps Crew Podcast.[6]
