Goblins are the main antagonists of the second book in the Goosebumps House of Shivers book series, Goblin Monday.
History[]
Mario Galagos visits the snowy mountains of Vermont with his friends Todd and Jewel Simms. He meets their eccentric grandparents, MomMom and Grandpa Tweety. Grandpa Tweety is an author who studies and writes stories about mythical creatures, including Goblins, which he claims roam the mountains. He mentions to Mario that the only thing that can stop a goblin is nutmeg, and gives him a satchel of nutmeg to carry around his neck. As Mario roams the area, he spots a small craeture with green fur, pointy ears, horns and cat-like eyes. It's a goblin. The goblin tries to attack Mario, but Mario manages to avoid being hurt. As the story progresses, Mario continues to encounter the goblin, but is unable to get anyone to believe him, as Grandpa Tweety begins to claim that he was lying about the goblin for his stories.
Mario also begins to suspect something is wrong with Grandpa Tweety. Birds from Tweety's birdcage disappear, he has a room filled with bird feet and Mario even sees him eating birds alive. Eventually, Mario manages to capture a goblin and show the rest of the Simms family who panic. Suddenly The Simms adults begin to transform into goblins. Mario tries to use the nutmeg satchel, but it doesn't work as there was never any nutmeg inside. Mario then grabs the leafblower he brought with him and blasts MomMom, Tweety, Mr. and Mrs. Simms and the other goblins, subduing them. Mario reveals that he's a goblin hunter who was on a mission to capture the goblins. He has Mr. and Mrs. Simms take him home. On the drive back, he reveals to Todd and Jewel that he's a rookie hunter. This is good news for Todd and Jewel who transform into goblins. Mario is out of nutmeg, so he is unable to defend himself as they tear him to shreds,

Trivia[]
- The early synopsis and the cover illustration for Goblin Monday initially had the goblins rest in stone cocoons, which would have played a part in the story as Mario unknowingly brings a goblin statue into the house. This was dropped and Mario just captures a goblin.
