Synopsis[]
Lucas discovers he can't feel pain after an unexpected encounter with his pet worms.
Plot[]
Lucas records himself preparing to do the Booms of Doom, the same stunt that killed his father, to honor his father. He climbs on his dirt bike, puts on his helmet, starts the engine, but then backs out, saying the wind's not right.
Stokes and Nora are asleep in bed together. Stokes wakes up and realizes it's morning. Nora didn't even realize they'd fallen asleep. She gets up, wrapping the sheet around herself, and waddles to the bathroom. Stokes apologizes for them having to sneak around. She says they're two grown adults having an affair: a widow and a married man. No matter how they spin it, that's the truth and it's wrong and sad, but also amazing and weird. She feels like every time she starts to feel good, something bad happens. He says nothing bad will happen. She says there's a lot going on, but she doesn't want to drag him into it. He wants to be dragged into it. He can't wait to be able to hold hands in public with her.
Lucas rides his dirt bike back to the Harbor Stop. He looks at the shrine to his dad and promises he's going to do it for his dad. As he moves around, he sees an eyeball rolling on the floor and he picks it up.
Lucas locks up and examines the eyeball as he leaves. He's surprised to see Stokes and Nora kiss as he drops her off. He starts recording them.
Margot searches for her dad, but he's not home. She texts him, asking where he is.
James comes into the kitchen just as some pastries pop out of the toaster. Eliza thought he might be hungry since he was out all night. She asks if he was out with someone special, but he doesn't want to talk about it. She laments that he used to tell her everything, then asks him seriously where he was. He says nowhere and walks away.
Isabella is doing her make-up when Victoria comes in and asks if Isabella sent Eliza an apology for what happened at her house. Isabella says no, because there was nothing to apologize for. Victoria asks what that means, but Isabella doesn't answer. Victoria leaves.
Ben checks on Isaiah's arm. Isaiah flinches in pain when Ben moves it, a movement that shouldn't hurt. Ben asks if he's been taking it easy on his arm. Isaiah says he has as he remembers all the times he's used his arm, fighting the troll and escaping the mine. Ben says his future is riding on this, which upsets Isaiah.
Lucas asks to talk to Nora, then asks what she was doing that morning. She says she had to get to the place early to make some pies. She notices the hat Lucas is wearing and says she hasn't seen it in a long time. He found it while clearing out the shed. She has noticed he's spending a lot of time in the shed recently. She knows he misses his dad. He asks if she doesn't also miss him. She says she does. Lucas has been thinking about making his own hat someday. Nora is find with that, as long as it's promoting a safe business. He puts the hat on Nora's head, saying it looks good on her, then takes it back and leaves after she tosses him his breakfast.
Stokes talks to Bratt/Biddle. Principal Stoller mentioned to Stokes that Biddle had used up all his sick days and wanted a mental health day. Stokes says that's not really a thing with teachers, but he's there to check in. Bratt says he's not feeling like himself and shouldn't be expected to teach like that. Stokes wants him to push through. He gets up, but Bratt doesn't, so he sits back down. Bratt says a friend of his has gone missing and he's freaked out about it. He's been missing for a while. Bratt wonders why people hurt the ones they love. Stokes doesn't know.
Bratt/Biddle is walking in the hallway when he notices the eyeball, which Lucas has made into a keychain and hung from his pants. He grabs at it, asking Lucas where he found it, but Lucas is weirded out and says he's going to math class. Bratt thinks Nora must have "him."
James tells Isabella he misses being bored. Isabella agrees she'd kill to be bored, not literally. James would rather be bored than have the constant feeling of dread. Isabella used to spend all her days trolling Allison's singing voice and hating her mother. She'd love to get back to that. Isaiah joins them, questioning why they're all at school today. Isabella can't believe they just have to go about their days like this didn't happen. Isaiah says they just have to wait for Margot's mom to arrive to find out what's going on. Margot walks up just in time to say she doesn't know when that'll be. She's used to it because she's been waiting for a long time for her mom to come home. But she's been thinking about telling her dad. They have to talk to an adult and she tells him everything and he tells her everything. He never lies. There's no way he's connected to any of this. Isaiah agrees, saying he's lived next door to them for years. They all talk about how boring and normal he is. They agree to go with it. The bell rings and they get up.
Margot is at her locker when Lucas comes to her asking if he can talk to her. She asks if it's about what happened at the docks and he says no, that was weird, but it's a different thing. He has something in his bedroom that he needs to show her. He is awkward as he tries to explain that it's in his bedroom and says he's not trying to pick her up.
Lucas tells Margot he needs to make sure his mom is gone before they go in. He watches her walk into the back and then leads Margot into the Harbor Stop. He leads her into his room, which she finds nice and not musky like she expected. He has her sit down and says what he has to show her is tough to watch. He plays the video of their parents kissing, shocking her. He says it's from that morning when he dropped her off. She is shocked that her dad is cheating on her mom. She asks if they know that Lucas knows. He says no. He tried to talk to his mom about it, but she denied it and lied to his face. Margot realizes her dad never came home. Lucas is sorry that he had to be the one to tell her, but figured she should know. If it makes her feel better, his dad is dead. She says it doesn't, but appreciates him trying. He has something to cheer her up and shows her his worms, the ones he took from the party. He pulls one out of the terrarium and asks if she wants to see him eat it. She says no, but it slithers up his nose and he gags. After a moment, he stops and says he's fine. He offers to walk Margot home and she accepts.
Isaiah sees Margot and Lucas walking together and asks if Margot is bringing Lucas to the meeting with her dad. Margot says no, they can't tell her dad anything because they can't trust her dad. Stokes steps outside and tells them he just started an 8000-piece puzzle if they want to help. Margot excuses herself and goes inside. Stokes comments that he didn't know she and Lucas were friends and he finds that great. Lucas's stomach gurgles and he leaves quickly.
Lucas is sleeping when the worms climb up the side of the terrarium and escape. They start crawling on his body and up his nose.
Lucas wakes up and is surprised to find all his worms gone. Nora calls him to breakfast. Lucas goes downstairs and Nora directs him to the burrito on the counter. He grabs it and leaves. As he walks outside, he takes a bite, but spits it out. Then he takes another and also spits that out. He throws the rest of it away. Then he grabs some trash out of the trash can and eats it.
Lucas passes Isaac and Tyson, who are fighting on the steps. One of them hits him, knocking him down the stairs. He gets up and tells them he's okay, surprising them. Lucas goes to his locker and slams his fist on it, then punches it when he realizes it didn't hurt at all. He slams his fingers in the locker, which also doesn't hurt. He watches as they quickly heal themselves. A classmate sees this and needs to go throw up despite him saying he can't feel it. Bratt/Biddle watches him through a window. Margot comes up to Lucas and wants to check in to see how he's handling things. He says he's good, just rolling with it. He knows Margot is in pain, but the great thing about pain is that you can choose not to feel it. She doesn't think that's how it works. He's learning that that's exactly how it works.
Isaiah tells James and Isabella that Allison saw something in the forest the night of the party and it could be connected. Isabella still doesn't want to include her because she's rude. Margot joins them and they bring her up to date on the conversation. Margot agrees that it's a bad idea to bring her in. Isaiah asks what Margot's problem is with Allison. Margot doesn't have a problem with her. She just doesn't want to bring Allison into the mess. Isabella asks if Isaiah and Margot dated. They say no, they're just neighbors. James likens them to an old married couple whose kids have gone off to college. Isabella wants them to talk about it because she's feeling the vibes. Allison comes up to them and asks what vibes and why Isaiah asked her to come there. Isaiah says they wanted to talk to her about what happened. She asks what he means by that. She denies anything happening in the forest. Margot begs Isaiah not to tell Allison, but Allison doesn't want Margot to tell her boyfriend what to tell or not tell her. She walks away and Isaiah gets up to follow her.
Isaiah stops Allison in the hallway and she asks him to tell her what's going on. Not the ghost story, but what's happening with him and Allison. They have a secret thing and she's not in on it. He confesses that Margot helped him cheat on his test so he could play in the game. That's it. She asks if that's supposed to make her feel better, because it doesn't. She walks away. Isaiah turns and sees Lucas in the hallway with his dirt bike.
Allison goes to Stokes and says she needs to talk to him about something.
Isaiah asks James, Margot, and Isabella if they've seen Lucas because he's acting super weird, like bringing his dirt bike into the school. Margot says he's just going through a lot right now. Isaiah tells her about Lucas getting sick after she went into her house the night before. She tells them that Lucas was just walking her home and he ate a worm. Isaiah says he was trying to flex at the Halloween party by saying he was going to do it there. Margot realizes he found the worms at the Biddle house, where the camera, mask, and clock all were. Margot pulls out her phone, but is interrupted by Stokes calling her into his office.
Margot goes into her father's office and Stokes tells her he knows about everything. She asks who told. He says that's not important, but he's the guidance counselor at the school and his own daughter has been accused of cheating. Margot is stunned. Stokes asks if she shared her answers to the test with Isaiah and if he pressured her to do so because it's out of character for her. She says she can't believe this is happening. Stokes realizes she's not denying, so he asks her directly if she cheated. She admits that she did. She guesses she learned it from her dad. She knows about him and Nora and asks if he was just not planning to tell her or her mom. He says it's not that simple, but she thinks it is simple. He's sleeping with someone who isn't her mom. They hear a noise outside and Stokes looks out.
Lucas is on the roof on his dirt bike, revving the engine.
Isaiah, Isabella, and James look up at Lucas. Isaiah thinks this has to be related to Biddle, but James says Lucas has always done weird things. Margot and Stokes join the crowd outside and call for Lucas to get down. Lucas ignores them and rides his bike off the roof and onto Stokes's car. Stokes checks on Lucas, first asking if he's out of his mind and then if he's okay. He's going to have to recommend that the principal expel Lucas. Lucas smiles and says he's going to recommend that Stokes stop banging his mom. He pushes his bike away. Margot follows him and stops him, asking what he was doing. She sees his shoulder and says he needs to get to the hospital. He says he doesn't and then pops it back in. He pulls his hoodie down to show her it's fine and she sees worms crawling under his skin as he says he's invincible. He says he'd love to stay and chat, but he has a date with the "Booms of Doom."
Margot goes to the Harbor Stop and tells her they need to talk. Nora thinks it's about the affair and says Stokes told her everything, but Margot says it's about Lucas. She thinks Biddle got to him through some worms. She thinks they're crawling around inside him and he's acting really strangely. She's worried about him. He said something about the "Booms of Doom" and then left. When Nora hears that, she grabs her stuff and says they need to go. As they exit, Margot asks what the "Booms of Doom" are and Nora says that's where his dad died. They climb into Nora's car.
Lucas stands on his bike, ready to go. Nora pulls up, honking her horn, and she and Margot get out of the car. Nora begs him not to do it, but Lucas says he feels good and doesn't feel any pain. Margot says it's the worms messing with him. He says no, they're helping him fulfill his dad's legacy. Nora knows he wants to be close to his dad, but this isn't the way. Lucas thinks it is. They're the same, Lucas and his dad. His father wanted him to be just like him. Nora says they're not the same. She continues standing in the way of his bike. Lucas says he's perfect and he's going to make it. Nora says his dad didn't do the run because he thought he could make it. He did it because he knew he couldn't. Lucas doesn't believe her, but she says he left a note and she didn't tell him because he idolized his father. She didn't want to ruin that for him, but he has to know the truth now. His father wanted to die and the trick was his way of doing that. Lucas steps off the bike and throws up all the worms. Nora holds him and apologizes to him as he cries and says he misses his dad. She misses him, too. She promises never to lie to Lucas again. He says he'll probably lie to her. Margot feels rumbling and they watch as the worms start to rise up.
The worms form into a monster and Lucas sends Margot and Nora back to the car. He grabs his helmet and tells the worms to come and get him, because he's the one they want. The worms chase him into the woods. Nora ends up following him in the car and the worms chase him along the water. They get to a warehouse and go inside, but the worms start coming through the cracks. Lucas tells them to turn the sawmill on while he buys them time. He lures the worms around by riding while Nora and Margot turn on switches. They finally get the chipper turned on, but it jams. Nora goes out, but the worms knock her down, forcing Margot to figure out how to get the chipper back on. She's able to get it working and Lucas leads them right into it while avoiding the same fate for himself. Once it's been chipped up and discarded into the water, Lucas, Margot, and Nora sigh in relief.
Isaiah, James, and Isabella arrive just as the police come. Lucas and Margot get in the car with them and leave while Nora waits for the police. She tells Officer Mike Hodgson she's sick of lying and decides to tell him the truth.
Nora's been committed to a psych ward, where she keeps saying she's not crazy and wonders why no one will listen to her. Outside the door, Victoria tells Hodgson that Nora's been through a lot with Dennis dying and he brought her to the right place. She promises they'll take care of her.
Bratt/Biddle goes to the sawmill and retrieves the eyeball. He tells Slappy he'll get him back together soon enough.
