Devin Brewer is a main character in Goosebumps: The Vanishing. He is portrayed by Sam McCarthy.
A smart and intelligent kid who skirts by with just enough effort. He has a fraternal twin sister, Cece, who is Type A and seemingly flawless, a complete contrast to him. Devin refuses to conform to societal expectations and frequently finds himself in trouble due to his refusal to let things go.
History[]
Devin and his sister, Cece spent time in Gravesend with their father when they were in eighth grade. During this time, Devin became close with Frankie. They returned to Gravesend years later when their aunt was having brain surgery to stay with their father for the summer. They were staying in their grandmother's home as she'd recently moved into a nursing home due to progressive dementia.
Anthony took Cece and Devin out to eat at Gwendolyn's and as they were leaving, he introduced them to C.J. Lewis, who worked there as his parents owned the restaurant. C.J. invited them to come hang out with some friends in the park the next day.
The following morning, Anthony made the kids pancakes, but Cece said she needed to go to the pharmacy to get some bath products and refused to eat them. Devin decided to go with her.
At the pharmacy, Devin asked which products he should get and Cece realized he was hoping Frankie would be there. They were distracted when Alex Diaz came in and had a conflict with the store manager, who wanted her to leave.
Devin and Cece went to the park, where C.J. greeted them and welcomed them to the group. Devin was excited to see Frankie there and told her that he followed her on TikTok and liked her knitting videos. He was disappointed when Trey came up behind Frankie and put his arm around her, revealing him as her boyfriend. As they were about to leave, C.J. called Cece and Devin back to the group and asked them about their uncle who mysteriously disappeared. Cece didn't want to tell the story, but Devin explained that he and some friends were going to spend the night at Fort Jerome on a dare when they disappeared. When Frankie asked if he was scared of the place, Devin said no, leading Trey to dare him to prove it.
They drove to Fort Jerome, where Trey cut the gate lock with bolt cutters, then sent Devin inside to take pictures. Devin found the room where the disappearance had happened and pulled up his phone to take pictures, but was startled when the power went out. Then the panels on the wall started sparking and a hole opened up in the floor. Devin walked toward it and saw a flash of a face. Then a gas came up and hit him in the face. Devin struggled to walk, holding himself up with the wall, as he made his way out. Cece found him and with her help, he was able to get out and they rushed to leave.
Back at home the next morning, Devin told Cece he didn't remember anything after going into the tunnel. Devin said he was sorry for not being more like her, but their conversation was interrupted by Anthony saying their grandmother had a rough night, so he had to go see her. He asked them to come with him, but Cece couldn't because she had to go to her camp, forcing Devin to go.
At the facility, they went to sit with Naomi, who was agitated and insisting that Matty couldn't have drowned because he was a strong swimmer. Anthony was able to calm her down with some deep breathing, but when he stepped away to talk to the doctor, Naomi grabbed Devin and said he smelled like Matty, forcing a nurse to intervene. Devin asked Anthony about Naomi talking about Matty like he was still alive and Anthony said she was never able to accept that he was gone. Then he said Devin reminded him a lot of Matty.
When they finally got home, Devin said he was hungry, so Anthony told him to order food while he went to take care of something in the basement. Devin was looking through the menus when he found an album labelled Matty. He flipped through pictures and was shocked to find one that looked like the face he'd seen at Fort Jerome. He went to ask his father about it, but his father didn't answer the knock on the basement door. Then Devin experienced a pain in his head. He grabbed his head and went outside, where he was grabbed by a plant growing from a manhole. It pulled him down and sprayed something in his mouth. He was able to free himself by throwing a pipe at a grate, which closed on the plant. Then he crawled from the debris and went back up. As he sat on the edge of the manhole, he questioned how he'd gotten there.[1]
Devin told Cece about his experience, but refused to tell their dad about it, saying he wanted to figure it out. He suspected he might have dementia, despite Cece's insistence that it wasn't. Together, they went to the coffee shop where Frankie works and while Cece left to go to camp without ordering, Devin stayed and helped Frankie empty the bucket of rain water from behind the counter.
Devin went back home and researched dementia. He called Cece and told her he had all the symptoms, but she continued to insist that wasn't it. He also told her he saw Uncle Matty's face every time he closed his eyes. Their conversation was interrupted by a knock at the door and Devin hung up on Cece to answer it.
Trey was waiting for Devin on the porch and told him to stay away from Frankie. Devin said Frankie wasn't his girl or his property and Trey hit him. As Trey went to leave, Devin tackled him. They fought until Frankie broke it up and pushed Trey toward his house. After Trey was done, Devin expressed surprise that Frankie was ever with him. Frankie told Devin that she didn't have choices like he did, that she couldn't go to college like she wanted because she didn't have the money. Then she told him it was weird that he'd followed her on TikTok, despite previously saying it wasn't.
When a look at a manhole cover sparked a memory, Devin ordered food from Gwendolyn's to get C.J. to their house. When C.J. arrived, he gave C.J. the food and asked for a favor. Together, they went down into the sewer. C.J. held the flashlight as Devin looked around. He found a root in some water, but when they heard a scream in the distance, C.J. left and said he would never help Devin again.
Devin went to Trey's dad's garage, where a creature attacked him. They fought until Frankie dropped a car on the creature, causing it to splat. Then she told Devin the creature was Trey. They left together, getting away from the garage.[2]
The next morning, Anthony asked Devin if he'd seen Trey, as Anthony thought Trey had broken into the basement. Devin said no and left to go meet Frankie. Frankie was freaked out because she believed she'd killed Trey. Devin told her about his fuzzy memories of being pulled into the sewer and said a lot of not-normal things were going on. Devin then took Frankie back to his father's basement so they could look around. Frankie was nervous and wanted to leave, but they were trapped when Antony returned. They hid and watched as he came in with a vine, which he cut into, revealing black goo inside. Then he placed the goo in a petri dish and followed it as it led him back out of the basement.[3]
Devin went to the hospital to visit Trey, who was awake, but not responding to anyone or anything. He brought Frankie coffee and her knitting things. Ramona Pamani came in, pretending to be Trey's doctor, and sent them out of the room so she could examine him. While they were getting snacks, Devin got a call from Cece, who said she was at their mom's apartment and couldn't remember going there. Frankie and Devin went to meet her there and arrived just in time to save her from an elevator, as a blob of black goo was following her and had trapped her there. They got on the subway, but the blob followed Cece onto the subway. After Cece was able to use the third rail to electrocute it, they got a Lyft to Fort Jerome, hoping to find answers there. They were shocked to see Anthony also walking around there and began to suspect he was behind everything.[4]
Devin and Cece went to spend the night at Frankie's. She woke them the next morning so she could go to work. They went with her to the coffee shop. When Devin and Frankie's conversation made Cece realize Alex was telling the truth about Trey's car, they went to see her, but she told them she was lying and she didn't want anything to do with what they were doing. Devin was frustrated when Frankie left to go be at Trey's when he got home from the hospital, saying Trey needed her. After she left, Devin was walking when he met a girl named Hannah, who said she knew he'd been at the Fort because she'd been there as well. There used to be a camp there and bad things happened. She offered to take him there and show him. He was going to go with her, but Frankie called and said she and Trey wanted to get into his dad's basement, so he went to meet her there instead. He got there just in time to see Anthony's head on the ground. When Anthony said they could join them, they ran upstairs and barricaded the door. C.J. then noticed a tape on the table and said that's what Jen dropped off. Frankie recognized it as a VHS tape and Devin said they could play it at Grandma's. They left to go there and met up with Alex along the way. Just as she joined them, Devin broke off from the group, saying he needed to get back to Hannah because he believe she could help them. They continued on without him.[5]
When they got to Naomi's nursing home, C.J. hooked up the player and played the tape. The watched as Matty and his friends planned their trip. Alex was horrified to watch her mom steal a new student's clothes because she was jealous of the girl talking to Matty. They kept watching as the teens went to Fort Jerome and ended up doing a hole. The camera focused on Hannah, who woke up and found her friends encased in pods. As Hannah tried to escape, a monster dragged her back into the hole right before Anthony and Jen arrived. Anthony saw the clothes and went to call the police while Jen grabbed the camera. While the teens watched, Devin went to Camp Nightmare with Hannah. They connected the name to Hannah from the video and when Devin didn't answer their phone call, they went out to Fort Jerome, where they found Devin standing on the ledge. He believed Hannah was standing there, telling him he needed to go with her to find the others. Cece was able to get through to him and convince him Hannah wasn't real. Then they got him back away from the ledge and decided to go back to Cece and Devin's to talk to whatever was inhabiting their dad. On their way, Trey checked on Devin and apologized, saying he felt like he'd started everything. Then he said no matter what happened between Devin and Frankie, he wouldn't be a jerk about it. When they got to the house, Cece and Devin left the others outside while they went in. After searching the house, they came back and said Anthony wasn't there. Devin pulled up the footage from the doorbell camera and they watched Ramona Pamani come into the house and leave with a suitcase. They wondered where she'd taken him.[6]
The teens met again at Cece and Devin's house. Trey brought the tape of the 20/20 episode his dad participated in, which showed Ramona talking about them getting swept out to sea by fast-moving currents. With her name, they looked her up. They found nothing, but found an Avi Pamani, who had written a book about global risk management. While Alex, Cece, and C.J. went to try to track down the book, Frankie, Devin and Trey went to the hospital to see if they could figure out anything about her from there. There, they learned that his chart said a pediatric dermatologist had treated him, but that doctor had had her badge stolen. They looked at security footage, which showed Ramona in Trey's room and then leaving the hospital and getting into a car. They got her license plate and Trey used it to get her address. They got there just as she was leaving and Trey used his bolt cutters to get them inside, where they found a book detailing 55 years of research dedicated to containing the threat at Fort Jerome. Ramona found them and told them to leave. They explained what they knew and she agreed to help them save Anthony, but said they had to leave quickly because they didn't have a lot of time.[7]
Ramona went with the teens to Fort Jerome, where she injected them all with the serum, which she said would last an hour and sent them down the hatch with an extra dose for Anthony. She opened the hatch and said she'd keep it open from outside. However, when they got down, she closed it behind them, trapping them. Despite this, they decided to stick to the plan. They found Anthony and injected his pod with the serum, freeing him and waking him up. Anthony looked at Matty's pod and wanted to take him as well, but the teens told him they only had one dose of the serum and they'd used it on him. They started to think about ways they could get out. Anthony realized that since a power outage had opened the hatch on the night Devin was first there, it would again. They made a plan to do the same again, using Trey's knowledge from his electrical engineering class. Since the serum had worn off for all of them, Anthony put on a protective suit and disabled the ship while they worked. Once it was done, Trey cut the power and they walked back through the room to get out. Anthony had to stay while they escaped because the connection had broken and he had to hold the cord himself. He said he'd come once they were safe. They got out and waited for Anthony. Trey noticed another backup generator was powering up. Just as it was about to power up, Anthony appeared with Sameer, Matty, Nicole, and Hannah, having decided he couldn't leave them behind. They got out just before the hatch closed, then took the teens back to Anthony's place, where Anthony told them to stay put. When the 1994 teens got stir crazy, the 2024 teens decided to let them go out individually with chaperones. Matty agreed to stay behind while the other three went out. Devin went out with Hannah, who wanted to show Devin where she used to live. She was upset to find the building was no longer there. Then she coughed up a pod that encased her. Devin ran away to the coffee shop, where he saved Frankie from the critter that had been Nicole. Then they went back home, where the critters trapped them and podded them. They were all freed when Jen and Anthony went back to Fort Jerome and let the ship go, which called all the critters back to the ship. The 1994 teens and the scientists who had worked in the facility all went back to space with the aliens. At the end of summer, the teens came together to say goodbye to Devin and Cece, who were going back to the city to meet their mom. While Cece was going to stay, Devin had arranged to come back to Gravesend to live with his dad, which excited Frankie.[8]
