Curly

Curly the Skeleton.

Curly the Skeleton is the de-facto spokesperson and mascot of the Goosebumps franchise. He has been illustrated on a number of Goosebumps memorabilia, including on the cover of five Tales to Give You Goosebumps books. No one knows exactly where this skeleton comes from or are even aware of his origins.

He also appeared on various bookmark and collectibles advertised for coming free with the book. Curly has also been featured on calendars and newsletters, illustrated personally by Tim Jacobus, often with his pet bulldog, Drool.

Scholastic's website referred to him as "The coolest skeleton in the graveyard."

Appearance

Curly is a groovy skeleton. Who he was originally, or where he came from is unknown. He is just a living skeleton without a past as of this time and moment.

He is usually a pure white skeleton and usually has some hair in a bright, or noticeable color. Like bright pink. Sometimes he seems to have possessed eyes, but other times he is shown with black eyes and small red pupils.

Sometimes, Curly will show up with some form of clothing. Like a pair of glasses or a red ascot around his neck with single green badge/button.

On most of the Tales to Give You Goosebumps covers, he can be seen with his pet bulldog Drool.

The Makings of Curly

On the cover of R.L. Stine's autobiography, Curly is shown next to R.L. and below the Abominable Snowman of Pasadena.

When the series first began, Scholastic, the series book publisher, had difficulty finding merchandisers to promote the books because the series has no main characters, and therefore, nothing to plaster on products.

In an interview with former Goosebumps cover artist Tim Jacobus, Tim discussed the creation of Curly. Tim had been asked by Scholastic to create a mascot for the series, so he designed a long haired skeleton-ghost for the cover of the book Tales to Give You Goosebumps. Most people, including Tim, didn't like the skeleton's design. In order to improve the character, it was given a new haircut and a full body. This character soon became known as Curly the Skeleton.

Since his creation, he has appeared on many of the book covers and products involving the series.
