Book and TV Episode Jillian is the protagonist of the story. She constantly has to deal with her twin sisters Katie and Amanda, as well as their life-size doll named Mary-Ellen. Her life is made no better when she ends up with Slappy the Dummy.
Katie Zinman

Book and TV Episode One of Jillian's twin sisters in the book, and her only sister in the episode. She and her sister Amanda are a pair of bratty twins who constantly bother Jillian with their doll Mary-Ellen.
Amanda Zinman

Book She and her twin sister Amanda are a pair of bratty twins who constantly bother Jillian with their doll Mary-Ellen.
Petey

Book Jillian's pet lizard, who ends up briefly lost.
Mary-Ellen

Book and TV Episode A life-size doll that Katie and Amanda always carry around. They claim that Mary-Ellen tells them to do horrible things to Jillian.
Bob and Connie Zinman

Book and TV Episode The parents of Jillian, Katie and Amanda. Bob likes to build birdhouses in his workshop.
Harrison Cohen

Book and TV Episode Jillian's best friend. He finds Slappy in the dumpster outside the Little Theater and believes that Jimmy O'James must have gotten rid of him.
Jimmy O'James

Book and TV Episode A teenage (middle-aged in the episode) ventriloquist who performs with Slappy the Dummy. However, when Slappy's insults and abuse become too much for him to handle, he throws Slappy away in the dumpster.
Slappy the Dummy

Book and TV Episode Slappy now performs with Jimmy O'James at the Little Theater. But when Slappy's insults and abuse finally get to Jimmy, he gets thrown out in the dumpster, only to be found by Harrison, who leaves him at Jillian's house.
Mrs. Henly

Book She offers Jillian and Harrison a chance to perform their clown act at a four year old birthday party. After everything in the act goes wrong, she decides not to pay them.
Maxie

Book Another ventriloquist dummy that Jillian and Harrison intend to use at a birthday party for six year olds. However, he ends up replaced by Slappy.
Eddie Simkin

Book An impatient six year old at the birthday party. He ends up grabbed by Slappy, who then causes mayhem at the party.
Kevin

TV Episode The Zinman family dog, replacing Petey from the book.
