Ben Grantley is the main antagonist in the seventeenth Goosebumps Series 2000 book, The Werewolf in the Living Room.

History[]

A fur trapper by trade, Ben Grantley was in the European country of Bratvia for business purposes. However, he was also unaware that a self-proclaimed werewolf hunter named Mr. Freidus and his son Aaron were also visiting Bratvia in search of a real life werewolf. Mr. Friedus would soon encounter Ben and, despite no evidence to the contrary, believed him to be a werewolf. Mr. Friedus captures Ben and takes him back to his home town in hopes of attaining fame for capturing a real live werewolf. Unbeknownst to both men, Aaron Freidus is the one turning into a werewolf.

When the Friedus' return home, Ben Grantley is locked in a cage in their living room as Mr. Friedus calls the media, ready to unveil Grantley as a real werewolf. Aaron, feeling pity for him and not believing him to be a werewolf, let's Ben go free. However, while everyone is distracted with Aaron who causes mayhem as a werewolf, it's revealed that Ben really was a werewolf and causes chaos in town. Aaron, in werewolf form, confronts Ben before both are caught by the police and Mr. Friedus. Mr. Freidus decides to let Aaron and Ben be studied by scientists to find a cure, when suddenly Aaron bites his father. Ben and the Freidus' escape into the forest. Now the three live in the forest and stalk the town, Aaron promising there will be more werewolves soon.

Despite his profession, Ben Grantley doesn't appear to be inherently evil. Although he does try to be deceptive about not being a werewolf, which really only works on Aaron. In his werewolf form he is a far more dangerous, causing mayhem and destruction throughout the town.

Physical appearance[]

Ben Grantley is described as a short and pudgy middle-aged man with balding hair. He wears a flannel shirt over baggy Khakis.
