Baker Grendel is the semi-antagonist of the fifteenth book in the Goosebumps SlappyWorld book series, Judy and the Beast.
History[]
Baker Grendel and his wife Hilda live in a mansion atop Black Rock, a mountain overseeing Sulphur Falls, Wyoming. Every spring, the Grendel family call upon Noah Glassman and his son Ira to come to the mansion in order to do work for them. Noah's daughter Judy, curious about what's really going on, hides in the family truck and winds up at the mansion.
Upon searching the mansion, Judy hears monstrous noises coming from one of the rooms in the mansions. She soon discovers that the noises are coming from Baker Grendel, a large, beastly man with wiry gray hair and a long white beard. The longer that Judy stays at the Grendel mansion, the more she begins to suspect that something is up with Baker. That maybe he's the beast that her father told her about. But despite a few encounters with the beast, Judy never gets any actual evidence. She does, however, run into two other boys about Ira's age who seem to be scared about something.
Soon, Judy is led to believe that her family left without her and is taken to Baker's room. It's there she finds her father and Ira, and learns that Baker wasn't the beast, Ira was. Baker soon reveals the truth to Judy. He's actually a scientist who deals with a malady known as the "beast disease". Every year, Ira, along with the two other boys, are brought up for their yearly treatments to suppress their beast forms. However, just as Baker tells Judy that the disease first starts when a child turns thirteen, Judy notices that she's starting to grow fur.
General information[]
Personality[]
Baker Grendel is a man who, for the majority of the book, doesn't reveal his true intentions to Judy. This makes him come off as more serious and threatening whenever she's around him. However, it also appears that he isn't as horrible as he at first comes off as. Perhaps the best example being when he plays with his dog Aurora. The likely reason for his more secretive side no doubt has to do with trying to keep the beast disease cases confidential.
Appearance[]
Baker Grendel is described as a gigantic man with wiry gray hair and a white beard. He's often described as very slovenly in appearance, especially after eating.
Trivia[]
- Baker shares similarities to the character of Dr. Palmer Jekyll from the Series 2000 book Jekyll and Heidi. Both men are mistaken by the protagonist to be secretly monsters, but in actuality are scientists trying to find a cure for someone else's beastly malady.
