Annabelle is a legend/curse and the main antagonist from the twenty-fourth Give Yourself Goosebumps book, Lost in Stinkeye Swamp. Who/what she is depends on the storyline the reader chooses.
Biography[]
The legend states that the titular location, Stinkeye Swamp, has been cursed by her two hundred years ago, and if the curse is broken by someone, said person would receive valuable treasures.
If the reader decides to open the diary…[]
Annabelle turns out to be a girl in her mid-teens who died on November 11, 1797, and roams the smuggler’s tunnels in Stinkeye Swamp as a spirit. She was supposed to dance with her boyfriend, Hubert, at a party on that very day, but was locked inside her house, causing Hubert to dance with another girl, Kirsten Mann. She decided to use the smuggler’s tunnel to sneak to the party, but was killed by a cursed skeleton hiding in the treasure room, causing her to turn into a spirit and haunt and guard the tunnels. The methods to break the curse in this storyline are either reuniting Annabelle with Hubert or placing the jewel you found on the tunnel floor into the door of the basement of Swamp House.
If the reader decides to use the magic telescope and talk to a man in rags…[]
The reader will learn that the Annabelle was a steamboat that crashed into a snag one night. On the day the Annabelle sank, Zeke (who turns out to be the riverboat hand and was dead all along) seems to be the one responsible for sinking the ship as he was on lookout duty that night, but was blamed for sinking the ship by the captain as the captain’s log proves that Zeke was innocent and supposed to be off-duty. The methods to break the curse in this storyline are to either draw the ace of spades while gambling with Zeke or prove his innocence to the ghostly crew via the captain’s log.
If the reader decides to use the magic telescope and talk to a park ranger instead…[]
The telescope will lead to a witch hut, where Annabelle will turn out to be an old witch with gray hair and a dark robe. From there on, the reader can choose to drink one of Annabelle’s magic potions, apple juice, banana shake, or chocolate milk, which will lead to the reader and Zeke being transformed into babies, transformed into monkeys, or being sent home safely respectively.
Trivia[]
- Annabelle (in the diary storyline) is one of the only two Give Yourself Goosebumps characters to have a confirmed death date, that being November 11, 1797. The only other character to have a confirmed death date is The Keeper of the Sword from The Curse of the Creeping Coffin.
