Amanda Benson is the protagonist of the first Goosebumps book, Welcome to Dead House.

History

Amanda Benson and her family moved to a creepy old town called Dark Falls, much to her and her younger brother Josh's dismay. At the beginning of Welcome to Dead House she had already begun to feel uneasy about the small town, and of course her new house. As she explored the house, she becomes startled as she notices Mr. Dawes, the Dark Falls realtor, "resting" in a dark corner of her new bedroom. As soon as the family dog Petey sees Mr. Dawes, he begins to bark uncontrollably.

Physical appearance

Amanda is twelve years old, Caucasian, tall, and thin with curly brown hair, dark brown eyes, and a serious face.

Personality

Amanda is very mature, patient and sensible for her age. She usually tries to get her younger brother Josh to cooperate when he is being his stubborn self. She is often reminding Josh that together they have to give the house and neighborhood a chance, though she is hesitant herself. There have been moments when Amanda was stubborn herself, but not as stubborn as her younger brother Josh and she would always pay her younger brother back if he played any tricks on her.

She can be funny as well and can have a laugh with her family, and there are plenty of moments where she gets along with Josh. Amanda also loves Petey, and she can always tell him to shape up if he is being uptight. She tries to be as strong as possible, and doesn't want to make a scene if nobody listens to her. Amanda has a good relationship with her friend Kathy (book) / Jennifer (TV Adaptation) and she always tries to help her out by slipping her the answers in math, even it is the wrong answers. She gets excited when she find something she's interested in and is always willing to try it out. Overall she is very kind and thoughtful, and loves her family no matter what.

Amanda Benson feels much better after seeing her bedroom. She goes outside to tell her younger brother Joshua Benson about it, but he is gone. She finds him a little while later in the cemetery... being chased by somebody. Amanda Benson keeps seeing the other dead children in her home and hearing strange sounds. Also, the friends she makes all seem a little different after all. It is later revealed that the children are all dead. Once a year, they must have the blood from a freshly killed person to sustain their "living dead" existence for another year.

Joshua Benson saves her at the last moment, when he shines his light on Raymond's face. This results in Raymond disintegrating and becoming a pile of bones. Amanda and Josh run home but when they arrive, they are attacked by the dead children who explain that there is no dead great uncle and that the letter sent to their parents was a trick to bring the Benson family to Dark Falls. ''“This is the dead house...once a year, you see, we need new blood."'' the dead children say, as they move forward to kill both Amanda and Joshua. Suddenly Mr. Dawes, the real estate agent, appears at the door and the dead children vanish. He tells them that he has already saved their parents from the dead people and that he will take them to join their parents. A gravestone however, reveals Mr. Dawes is also dead. Amanda and Joshua manage to escape Mr. Dawes after Joshua hits him on the head with his flashlight. It turns out the dead children are half-zombies and half-vampires that crumble under light, and they knock down a tree to kill all of the living dead. Their parents saw everything. As the family is leaving the dead house, they meet on the driveway a new family coming to move to the house. Only somebody too familiar is there, and Amanda Benson herself knew for sure that it was Mr. Dawes.
